Before you buy your Australia & New Zealand eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM Australia & New Zealand: one data plan on both sides of the Tasman
Our eSIM Australia and New Zealand plan puts both countries on one data line: Optus while you’re in Sydney, Melbourne or Cairns, and One NZ once you land in Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown.
In Australia, Optus is strong in the cities and along the east coast, so the drive from Sydney up to Byron Bay, the Gold Coast and Airlie Beach is well served. The outback is another matter. Telstra has the widest coverage out there and it isn’t included, which means long stretches with no signal on the Nullarbor, in the Red Centre around Uluru and on many highway runs between towns.
New Zealand runs on One NZ, the network formerly called Vodafone New Zealand. Auckland, Wellington, Rotorua and Queenstown have good coverage. On the South Island the gaps are part of the trip: the Southern Alps, Fiordland and the West Coast roads all have stretches without signal, so don’t count on live directions on the way to Milford Sound.
Plans run from 1 GB for 7 days up to 20 GB for 30 days, and validity begins at your first connection in either country. Ten days on the east coast plus ten in a South Island campervan fits inside one 30-day plan. It’s data only, with no Australian or New Zealand number; calls go over WhatsApp or FaceTime, and your home SIM can stay on for texts. Hotspot is allowed, and top-ups go onto the same eSIM.

Australia & New Zealand Travel and Connectivity Guide
Coverage, road trips and the flight across the Tasman
Countries covered
Two countries, and nothing else in the South Pacific:
Networks by country
• Australia: Optus
• New Zealand: One NZ (formerly Vodafone New Zealand)
Telstra, the network with the widest reach in the Australian outback, isn’t included.
Crossing the Tasman
There’s no land border here, so the switch happens on a flight of around three hours from the east coast to Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown. When you land, take the phone off flight mode. It drops Optus and looks for One NZ, which can take a minute or two. You keep the same eSIM and the same plan, and the days carry on counting from your first connection. Flying back to Australia works exactly the same way.
eSIM Australia New Zealand coverage on the road
Optus covers the cities and the east coast well, including the drive between Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns. Leave that corridor and it thins out. The Nullarbor crossing, the Stuart Highway, the road out to Uluru and many long outback runs have hours with no signal. In New Zealand, One NZ is solid in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Rotorua and Queenstown, while the Southern Alps, Fiordland (much of the Milford Road included) and the West Coast highway over Haast Pass have long gaps. Download offline maps and campsite details before you set off.
Data usage tips
• 1 GB (7 days): a short stopover in Sydney or Auckland, with maps and messaging
• 3–5 GB (30 days): two or three weeks of navigation, rideshare, social media and the odd video call
• 10 GB (30 days): a month across both countries, lots of photo uploads and some streaming on rest days
• 20 GB (30 days): remote work, or a laptop on hotspot in the campervan most days
• Longer trips: top up the same eSIM rather than buying a second one
Apps that help
CamperMate (both countries) and WikiCamps (Australia) for campsites, dump stations and fuel; Uber in the Australian cities and in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, plus DiDi in Australia; a contactless bank card or phone wallet to tap on and off Sydney’s Opal trains, buses and ferries; and an AT HOP card for Auckland’s buses and trains.
Before you go
The plan covers Australia and New Zealand only. Fiji, the Cook Islands, Samoa, New Caledonia and the other Pacific islands aren’t included, so a beach week in Nadi or Rarotonga needs its own plan. Stopovers on the way out aren’t covered either: for a few days in Singapore or Bali, add our Singapore eSIM or Indonesia eSIM. Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi at home, then after landing turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line and make it your mobile-data line. The APN sets itself.

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in Australia & New Zealand
Is it a good choice for a working holiday?
For the first weeks, yes. You land in Sydney or Auckland with data already working, so you can sort out a room, a bank appointment and transport before signing up for anything local. For a stay of several months, a local prepaid SIM usually works out cheaper and gives you an Australian or New Zealand number, which employers, banks and landlords tend to ask for. In Australia you’ll show ID to activate one. A sensible pattern is the eSIM for arrival and the first month, then a local SIM once you’ve settled.
Will I have signal in the outback and on the South Island?
In towns, yes; between them, often not. Optus thins out quickly once you leave the east coast and the main cities, and the Nullarbor and the drive to Uluru have long stretches without coverage. In New Zealand, expect gaps in the Southern Alps, in Fiordland on the road to Milford Sound and along the West Coast between Haast and Franz Josef. Save offline maps before each long drive.
Is it cheaper than separate eSIMs for Australia and New Zealand?
If you’re only visiting one of them, probably not. The single-country plans, our Australia eSIM and New Zealand eSIM, are often cheaper for that. The combined plan makes sense once the trip includes both, because one data allowance covers the whole route and you don’t end up with two plans that each sit half-used.
Which phones support this eSIM?
Most recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models do, as long as the phone isn’t tied to one carrier. The full list is on our supported devices page.
Can I use it as a hotspot in a campervan?
You can. Hotspot and tethering are allowed, so a laptop or a second phone can share your data on the road. The outback and South Island gaps apply to the hotspot too: no signal on the phone means none on the laptop.
Can I add data to the Australia and New Zealand eSIM?
Through your Esimy dashboard or the app. Top-ups go onto the eSIM you already have, so there’s no new QR code to scan.
Which plan size suits a two-week trip across both countries?
- 3 GB: light use, mostly maps and messaging, with hotel Wi-Fi each night
- 5 GB: the usual pick for two weeks of navigation, rideshare, photos and social media
- 10 GB: you stream, upload video or run a laptop on hotspot
All three last 30 days. If you run low on a long road trip, top up instead of buying again.
Do I get an Australian or New Zealand phone number?
No, the plan has no number and no calls or SMS. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Messenger instead, and keep your home SIM active alongside the eSIM to receive bank codes.
Does it keep working when I fly from Sydney to Auckland?
It does, and all you have to do is turn off flight mode after landing. Your phone drops Optus and connects to One NZ within a minute or two. Validity runs on from your first connection in Australia, so a 30-day plan bought for the whole trip covers the New Zealand leg as well.
Which network does it use in Australia?
Optus, on 4G/LTE. It handles Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast and the Cairns area well. Telstra isn’t included, and you’ll notice that away from the coast: on the Nullarbor, in the Red Centre and along long outback highways, Optus has big gaps.
Which countries does the Australia and New Zealand eSIM cover?
Just the two in its name. Fiji, the Cook Islands, Samoa, New Caledonia and the rest of the Pacific aren’t included, and neither are stopovers in Asia.
What is the best eSIM for Australia and New Zealand?
For a trip that takes in both countries, a plan that covers both is the simplest option: one eSIM, one balance, no swapping lines halfway. Esimy’s runs on Optus in Australia and One NZ in New Zealand, with sizes up to 20 GB for 30 days. The real choice is Optus against Telstra. Optus is good in the cities and on the east coast, but if you’re spending days in the outback, Telstra (not included) reaches further.
