Before you buy your Barbados eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM Barbados: FLOW 4G for Bridgetown, both coasts and the cruise terminal
Barbados is only about 34 km from end to end, so an eSIM Barbados plan on FLOW’s 4G/LTE network reaches almost everywhere you’re likely to go.
You’ll have a good signal around the Careenage in Bridgetown, along the south coast through Hastings, St Lawrence Gap and Oistins, and up the west coast past Holetown. The weaker patches are the deep gullies inland and the Atlantic side near Bathsheba, where the road drops between steep hills. Neither will spoil a day out.
Lots of people fly in to join a ship, since Bridgetown is the home port for many Caribbean cruises. The eSIM works at the terminal and in town, but it covers Barbados only and goes quiet once you sail for St Lucia, Grenada or Antigua. Visiting several countries? Our Global eSIM may fit the trip better; check its country list first.
You won’t get a Barbados number. The plan is data only and can’t make ordinary calls or send SMS, so call home over WhatsApp or FaceTime while your home SIM stays on for texts from the airline. There’s no ID check when you pay. Once the emailed QR code is scanned on Wi-Fi, any extra data goes onto that eSIM through the Esimy app or your dashboard.

Barbados Travel and Connectivity Guide
Strong on the west and south coasts, quieter on the Atlantic side
Coverage areas
Barbados is small enough that FLOW reaches most of it. Bridgetown, the cruise terminal and Grantley Adams are solid, and so is the south coast through Hastings, Rockley, St Lawrence Gap and Oistins. Up the west coast, the signal stays good through Holetown and on to Speightstown. Two kinds of place are weaker. Deep wooded gullies inland, Welchman Hall among them, can cost you a bar or two, and the rugged east side around Bathsheba and the Scotland District hills has a few dead spots along the coast road.
Network
Connects to FLOW, Cable & Wireless’s network in Barbados, on fast 4G/LTE, and to no other network. Speed isn’t capped on our side. What you get on the day depends on the signal, where you are and your handset, and on the south and west coasts that’s usually plenty for a video call from the beach. The bars drop most often on the Atlantic side, along the coast road below the Scotland District hills.
Choosing a data size
• 1–3 GB: a cruise turnaround day in Bridgetown, or a long weekend of maps, WhatsApp and a bit of Instagram
• 5–10 GB: one to two weeks on the south or west coast, getting about by bus or hire car, with regular video calls
• 20 GB: a month or more, or remote work from a rented apartment on the south coast
Tourist highlights
Snorkeling over the shipwrecks in Carlisle Bay, often with turtles for company; the tram ride through the limestone chambers of Harrison’s Cave; St Nicholas Abbey, a 17th-century plantation house that still makes its own rum; fried flying fish and live music at the Oistins fish fry on a Friday night; surfers at the Soup Bowl in Bathsheba; a day of cricket at Kensington Oval; the Parliament Buildings and the boats moored along the Careenage in Bridgetown; sunset on the west-coast sand near Holetown.
Apps that help
Google Maps is reliable for driving, which is on the left here; save Barbados offline before you set out for the east coast. Buses come in three kinds: blue Transport Board buses, yellow privately run minibuses and white ZR vans with a maroon stripe. They all charge the same flat fare, so keep small notes or coins ready. Taxis don’t use meters, so agree the price before you get in. Catamaran crews and restaurants tend to confirm bookings on WhatsApp. Cards are accepted in most places, and the Barbados dollar is pegged at two to one US dollar, which is widely taken as well.
eSIM Barbados or home roaming?
Barbados sits outside the included roaming zones of most UK and EU plans, and US carriers usually charge a daily fee. After installing the Esimy eSIM at home, check one thing in your settings. Data Roaming should be on for the eSIM and off for your regular SIM, with the eSIM chosen for mobile data. Your usual number then still receives the SMS your airline or villa owner sends, and you aren’t paying for data on it.
Why travelers choose Esimy Barbados
- Data on FLOW from the arrivals hall at Grantley Adams
- Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, with no passport upload or form to fill in
- Install at home; the 7 or 30 days count from your first connection in Barbados
- Use your phone as a hotspot for a laptop or tablet
- Top up the eSIM you already have, from the app or your dashboard
Best time to visit
- December to May: the dry season and the busiest months, when winter flights from the UK and North America arrive daily
- June to November: hurricane season brings more rain, but also fewer visitors and lower prices
- July to early August: Crop Over, which ends with the Grand Kadooment parade
- Check the fixtures at Kensington Oval if you’d like to catch a cricket match during your stay

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in Barbados
Should I buy a Barbados SIM card instead?
That depends on how long you’re staying. On a twelve-month Welcome Stamp, get a local Barbados SIM card: landlords and banks will want a local number, and local rates beat any travel plan over a year. For a week or two, the eSIM saves you a trip to a phone shop (with a possible queue and ID check), and your home SIM never comes out of the phone.
I’m starting a cruise in Bridgetown. Will the eSIM Barbados plan work on other islands?
It covers you until the ship leaves Bridgetown. The terminal, the town and the night or two many people spend in a hotel before boarding are all fine, but from the first port of call onward you’ll need other cover. For an island-hopping route, check whether our Global eSIM lists each stop before you buy.
Which phones are compatible?
Any unlocked phone that supports eSIM. That covers recent iPhones and most newer Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models; our list of supported devices has the details.
Can I tether my laptop?
Yes. Hotspot is allowed, so a laptop or tablet can run on the eSIM’s data. Watch the total, because video calls on a laptop use far more than they do on a phone.
How much data do I need, and is there an unlimited plan?
No unlimited plan, sorry. The biggest is 20 GB for 30 days, which covers a month on the island or a stretch of remote work. For a week of maps, WhatsApp and beach photos, 3 GB is usually plenty. Take 5 GB if you post a lot of video, or 10 GB for two weeks of heavy use. A cruise turnaround day needs just 1 GB.
What happens if I run out of data?
Open the Esimy app or your dashboard and add a plan to the eSIM you’re already using. It’s ready to go with no new QR code and no reinstall.
How do I install and turn on the eSIM?
Three steps, and the first two can happen at home:
- Check out with card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Nobody asks for ID, and the QR code is emailed to you.
- On Wi-Fi, scan the code from your phone’s eSIM settings, ideally a day or two before you fly.
- On arrival, enable Data Roaming on the eSIM line and select it for mobile data. The APN is set automatically, and validity starts with that first connection in Barbados.
Is the eSIM Barbados signal good on the east coast and inland?
Mostly. Bridgetown and the west and south coasts are reliable. Around Bathsheba and Cattlewash on the east coast, and in gullies such as Welchman Hall near Harrison’s Cave, you might see one bar or hit a brief dead spot. On an island this size it rarely lasts long.
Can I use it as soon as I land at Grantley Adams?
Yes, as long as it’s already installed. Flip Data Roaming on for the eSIM once the seatbelt sign goes off at Grantley Adams International, and it usually picks up FLOW within a couple of minutes, in time to check the route to your hotel.
Which network will my phone show in Barbados?
FLOW. The eSIM connects to FLOW, Cable & Wireless’s network on the island, on fast 4G/LTE, and doesn’t hop over to Digicel.
Does the Barbados eSIM come with a local number?
It doesn’t. You get mobile data, with no Barbados number, standard calls or SMS. Plenty of Bajans message and call on WhatsApp anyway, so it rarely gets in the way, and your normal SIM stays active in dual-SIM mode for texts.
What is the best eSIM for Barbados?
On an island this compact, coverage rarely decides it, because FLOW reaches nearly everywhere visitors go. So the choice comes down to how much data you’ll use, and to the fact that ours is data only, with no Barbados number. It runs on FLOW’s 4G/LTE network and comes in sizes from 1 GB (7 days) to 20 GB (30 days).
