Before you buy your British Virgin Islands eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM British Virgin Islands with FLOW data for Tortola, the outer islands and the boat in between
Land at Beef Island or step off the ferry in Road Town, and an eSIM British Virgin Islands plan from Esimy puts your phone straight onto FLOW’s 4G/LTE network.
Lots of visitors never fly in. They cross by ferry from St Thomas, and that’s where the first surprise tends to happen. St Thomas and St John belong to the US Virgin Islands, a separate territory, and the BVI plan doesn’t work there. It comes to life on the British side, so if you’re spending a few nights in the USVI first, sort out cover for those days separately.
Ashore, signal is good around Road Town, Cane Garden Bay and Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda. Afloat, it comes and goes. Most anchorages near the main islands get a usable connection, but it thins on the long sail to Anegada and in bays tucked behind headlands. Download charts and offline maps before you cast off.
Our BVI eSIM carries no local number and no SMS, just data. WhatsApp and FaceTime handle the calls, while your home SIM sits in the second slot for bank codes. You buy without ID, scan the emailed QR code on Wi-Fi at home, and if the crew drains your hotspot by Wednesday, top up from the app.

British Virgin Islands Travel and Connectivity Guide
Strong on Tortola, thinner out at sea and on far-off Anegada
Where an eSIM British Virgin Islands plan has signal
Tortola carries most of the signal and most of the people. Road Town and the marinas around it, Nanny Cay and Village Cay among them, have good signal, as do the north-shore beaches at Cane Garden Bay, Brewers Bay and Apple Bay, though the steep roads down to them can go quiet on the bends. The airport is on Beef Island, joined to Tortola’s east end by a short bridge, and sits inside FLOW’s coverage. On Virgin Gorda, Spanish Town, The Baths and the North Sound are normally fine. Jost Van Dyke has signal in Great Harbour and along White Bay. Anegada is flat, low and roughly 15 miles north of Virgin Gorda, so expect a weaker, less predictable connection there and on the smaller cays.
Network
Connects to FLOW (Cable & Wireless) on 4G/LTE, and only FLOW. Around Road Town, the Tortola beaches and Spanish Town it copes with maps, WhatsApp calls and the odd video upload without trouble. Out on the water it’s a different story. Signal carries a fair way offshore near the main islands, then thins out on open passages such as the run up to Anegada, and behind some headlands. On a charter you’ll have stretches with nothing between anchorages. Esimy doesn’t throttle, so speed depends on where the boat is and on your phone.
Data usage tips
• 1–3 GB: a day trip on the ferry from St Thomas, or a week on a crewed yacht with Wi-Fi at the marinas
• 5–10 GB: a bareboat charter week where the skipper checks weather and charts on the phone and the crew shares a hotspot
• 20 GB: a long stay on Tortola, or a villa week where your laptop works off the phone’s hotspot
Tourist highlights
Scrambling between the granite boulders and tidal pools at The Baths on Virgin Gorda, then following the trail over to Devil’s Bay. A painkiller at the Soggy Dollar Bar on White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, named for the wet banknotes of sailors who swam ashore. Snorkelling the caves at Norman Island and diving the wreck of the RMS Rhone off Salt Island. Lobster dinners and long empty beaches on Anegada, at Loblolly Bay and Cow Wreck Beach. A slow afternoon at Cane Garden Bay on Tortola’s north shore, and the view from Sage Mountain, the highest point in the BVI.
Apps that help
There’s no Uber or Bolt here. Taxis charge set fares by route, often per person, so confirm the price before you get in and save the driver’s number on WhatsApp for the ride back. Many visitors hire a jeep on Tortola instead. Driving is on the left and the hills are steep; Google Maps works, but download an offline area for the back roads. Ferries link Road Town and West End with St Thomas and St John, and also run between Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke, so check the day’s timetable and buy ahead in high season. Sailors lean on Navionics for charts and Windy for wind forecasts. Prices, cash and card payments are all in US dollars.
Roaming tips
The BVI sit outside every roam-like-at-home deal, so UK and EU contracts charge roaming here, and many US plans count it as international even though the US Virgin Islands next door are domestic for most US carriers. That border is the trap. Off Tortola’s West End or at Jost Van Dyke, St John is only a few miles away, and a home SIM with roaming switched on can latch onto a US tower without telling you. With the Esimy eSIM installed, leave your home line’s Data Roaming off, turn it on for the eSIM, and make the eSIM your mobile-data line. Flying in through San Juan? Our Puerto Rico eSIM covers the connection.
Why travelers choose Esimy British Virgin Islands
- FLOW 4G/LTE working as you leave Terrance B. Lettsome airport or the Road Town ferry terminal
- One phone can run a hotspot for the rest of the charter crew
- No passport scan or registration form at checkout
- Validity begins with the first BVI connection, so buying weeks ahead is fine
- Top up mid-charter from the app without a new QR code
Best time to visit
- December to April: dry, breezy and busiest, the classic charter season; book boats and moorings early
- Late March or early April: the BVI Spring Regatta brings racing yachts and parties to Tortola
- Late July into early August: the Emancipation Festival, with parades and music in Road Town
- June to November: hurricane season; September and October are the quietest months, and some bars and resorts close for a few weeks

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in British Virgin Islands
Should I get a BVI SIM card in Road Town instead?
For a holiday, probably not. A local SIM card usually means finding a phone shop in Road Town, showing your passport and taking out your own SIM, often on the first afternoon of a charter when you’d rather be sailing. It does give you a local number, and over several months it can work out cheaper. The eSIM, by contrast, is installed before you’ve even packed.
Which phones work?
Any unlocked phone that supports eSIM, which includes recent iPhones and the latest Galaxy and Pixel lines from Samsung and Google. To be sure about yours, look it up in our list of supported devices.
Can I share data with the rest of the boat?
Hotspot and tethering are both allowed. One phone can keep a whole crew online at anchor, but four people sharing get through gigabytes quickly, so go bigger or plan on a top-up.
How much data does a charter week use, and is there an unlimited eSIM British Virgin Islands plan?
Size it honestly, because island data is priced well above European rates. A ferry day trip or a short stay fits in 1 GB. A charter week of maps, weather and messages usually needs 3 to 5 GB, or 10 GB if your phone is the boat’s hotspot. There’s no unlimited plan; 20 GB for a month is the ceiling, and top-ups cover anything beyond that.
Can I top up mid-charter?
Yes, from the Esimy app or the dashboard on our site. The extra data is added to your existing eSIM, and a marina’s Wi-Fi is enough to do it if you’ve run dry.
How do I install it before the ferry or flight?
- Pay by Apple Pay, Google Pay or card. Nobody asks for a passport, and the QR code reaches your email a moment later.
- Scan it while you’re on Wi-Fi, at home or at the hotel the night before the ferry, under your phone’s cellular settings.
- Once you’re in the BVI, switch the eSIM’s Data Roaming on and pick it for mobile data. The APN configures itself, and the plan’s clock only starts at this point.
Is there signal while sailing, or out on Anegada?
Often, not always. In the main anchorages around Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Norman Island you’ll usually have a usable connection. It fades on open passages, most noticeably on the sail north to Anegada, and some bays behind headlands are weak. Anegada is low and remote, so treat signal there as a bonus. Grab the forecast and save charts offline while you still have marina Wi-Fi.
Does it work at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island?
It does. Flip the eSIM’s Data Roaming on during the walk to immigration, and you can message your taxi or charter base before your bags come out.
Will the eSIM British Virgin Islands plan work in St Thomas or St John?
No. St Thomas, St John and St Croix make up the US Virgin Islands, a different territory, and this plan doesn’t connect there. That catches out a lot of people arriving on the ferry from Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook. Install the eSIM before you travel and it starts working on the BVI side. For days in the USVI, check whether our USA eSIM lists those islands before relying on it.
Which network does it use in the BVI?
FLOW, which Cable & Wireless runs, on 4G/LTE. It doesn’t hop onto any other network, even within sight of the US islands.
Does this British Virgin Islands eSIM come with a phone number?
No, it’s data only. You won’t get a +1 284 number, and regular calls and SMS aren’t included. Plenty of taxi drivers and restaurants take bookings on WhatsApp, and your home SIM still picks up texts to your usual number.
What is the best eSIM for the British Virgin Islands?
For most visitors, a data plan on a solid local network. Ours runs on FLOW’s 4G/LTE, comes in five sizes from 1 GB to 20 GB (the 1 GB lasts 7 days, the others 30), and doesn’t start counting until it connects in the BVI. It’s data only and needs no ID. The one limit to know before you buy: it covers the BVI alone, so days in St Thomas or St John need separate cover.
