Before you buy your Brunei eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM Brunei that covers the whole sultanate and stops at Sarawak
This eSIM Brunei plan runs on UNN, Brunei’s national mobile network, and suits the short visit most people make: a few days in Bandar Seri Begawan with a trip out to Temburong.
There’s only one network to think about, because the mobile brands sold in Brunei all run on UNN. Put the eSIM on your phone at home over Wi-Fi, turn on its Data Roaming when you land at Brunei International Airport, and you can book a Dart car into town before you reach the exit. Kampong Ayer, Gadong and the waterfront mosques are all inside the city’s coverage.
Geography is the catch. Sarawak wraps around Brunei on the land side and even splits the country in two. Drive from Kuala Belait to Miri, cross to Limbang or take the ferry from Muara to Labuan, and you’re in Malaysia, where this plan doesn’t connect. Our Malaysia eSIM covers that side, and the Singapore eSIM suits a stopover on the way.
Expect little or no signal once the longboat heads upriver into Ulu Temburong. The eSIM carries data only, with no Brunei number for calls or SMS, and needs no ID at checkout. Need more data later? Add it in the Esimy app or your dashboard, no new QR code required.

Brunei Travel and Connectivity Guide
Signal in the capital, the Temburong rainforest and at the border
Coverage areas
Brunei is small, and most people live in the Brunei-Muara district, so the strongest coverage is where you’ll spend most of your time: Bandar Seri Begawan, Gadong, Kiulap, the airport area, Jerudong and the port at Muara. The coastal highway west through Tutong to Seria and Kuala Belait has 4G too. Kampong Ayer, the water village across the river from the city centre, sits under the capital’s towers. Temburong is the exception. Bangar, its one small town, has signal, but once your longboat heads upriver to Ulu Temburong National Park, expect weak or no signal for the rest of the day.
eSIM Brunei network and the Malaysian border
Runs on UNN, Brunei’s national mobile network, over fast 4G/LTE. It’s the network behind every local mobile brand, so your coverage matches what residents get, and we don’t throttle it. A slow page usually means weak signal or an older phone. Sarawak surrounds the country on land, though. Near Kuala Belait, around the Limbang side and out on Brunei Bay your phone can sometimes see a Malaysian signal, which this eSIM can’t use. If data stops close to the border, open the eSIM line’s network settings, turn off automatic selection and pick the Brunei network by hand.
Data usage tips
• 1–3 GB: a two- or three-day stopover with maps, Dart rides, WhatsApp and photos of the mosques
• 5–10 GB: seven days or longer, including Temburong and the Belait coast, with video calls home from the hotel
• 20 GB: a work trip or a long stay, with a laptop tethered to your phone
Tourist highlights
The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, its golden dome reflected in the lagoon beside it; Kampong Ayer, the stilt village across the Brunei River, reached by water taxi from the city waterfront, with a cultural and tourism gallery on its history; the Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, the country’s largest, near Gadong; satay, nasi katok and grilled fish at the Gadong night market; the Royal Regalia Museum in the city centre; an evening boat into the mangroves to look for proboscis monkeys, passing Istana Nurul Iman on the way; the canopy walkway in Ulu Temburong National Park; Tasek Merimbun lake in Tutong; and the Billionth Barrel Monument at Seria, in the oil district of Belait.
Apps that help
Street taxis are scarce in Brunei, so most visitors book rides through Dart, the local ride-hailing app. Set it up while you’re on Wi-Fi. Google Maps covers the capital well. The purple public buses run fixed routes around Bandar Seri Begawan but stop early in the evening, and water taxis to Kampong Ayer take cash, with the fare agreed before you step aboard. The Brunei dollar trades at par with the Singapore dollar, and Singapore notes are accepted. On Fridays many shops and restaurants close for a couple of hours around midday prayers, so plan lunch around that.
Roaming tips
In dual-SIM, your home line handles calls and texts but keeps Data Roaming off, while the Esimy eSIM carries the data with roaming switched on. The plan covers Brunei only. The Temburong Bridge takes you from Muara to Temburong without leaving the country, while the older road route through Limbang crosses into Malaysia and back. Heading on to Miri through the Sungai Tujoh checkpoint, or taking the ferry from Serasa terminal in Muara to Labuan and on to Kota Kinabalu? Add our Malaysia eSIM before you go. For a Singapore stopover there’s the Singapore eSIM.
Why travelers choose Esimy Brunei
- UNN 4G/LTE in Bandar Seri Begawan, Gadong and along the coast to Kuala Belait
- QR code by email straight after checkout, and nobody asks for ID
- Validity begins in Brunei, not on the day you pay
- Share data with a second phone by hotspot
- Add data to the same eSIM if you decide to stay longer
Best time to visit
- February to April: usually the driest months, good for Temburong and river trips
- October to January: the wettest stretch, with heavy downpours, though rain rarely lasts all day
- Ramadan: restaurant hours change and eating or drinking in public during daylight is best avoided; Hari Raya Aidilfitri afterwards brings the open house at Istana Nurul Iman
- 23 February is National Day and 15 July the Sultan’s birthday, both marked with celebrations in the capital

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in Brunei
Is a Brunei SIM card for tourists a better option?
For a long stay, possibly. A local prepaid SIM means registering with your passport at a shop, and opening hours (including the Friday midday break) can get in the way on a short trip. Ours is already on your phone when you land. If you’re working in Brunei for months or need a local number for calls, go with the local SIM.
Is my phone compatible?
If it supports eSIM and no carrier has locked it, yes. That covers most recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models; the list of supported devices has the rest.
Can I share data through a hotspot?
You can. Tethering is allowed on this plan, which helps if you’re working on a laptop from a hotel in Gadong. Keep an eye on usage, because software updates and cloud backups can eat a few gigabytes quickly.
What if my two-day stopover turns into a week?
Buy a top-up in the Esimy app or your dashboard. It goes on the same eSIM, and there’s nothing new to scan.
Is 1 GB enough for a few days in Brunei?
For two or three days in the capital it usually is, even with maps and a Dart ride or two each day, and 3 GB gives you room for photos. A week that takes in Temburong and Belait suits 5 GB, or 10 GB with regular video calls. The 20 GB plan, our largest, fits a work trip; we don’t offer unlimited data in Brunei.
What are the steps to install it?
Buy the plan online; there’s no ID step and the QR code lands in your inbox right away. Scan it over Wi-Fi using Add eSIM in the iPhone’s Cellular settings, or the SIM manager on Android. After you land in Brunei, let the eSIM roam (Data Roaming on) and set it as your data line. The APN fills itself in, and validity begins with that first connection.
Does eSIM Brunei coverage reach Temburong and the Belait district?
Belait, yes: the coastal highway through Tutong to Seria and Kuala Belait has 4G. In Temburong, Bangar has signal, but the longboat ride upriver to Ulu Temburong National Park and the park itself have weak or no signal. Download maps and park details before you leave Bangar.
Can I get online straight away at Brunei International Airport?
You should. The airport sits within the capital’s coverage, so install the eSIM beforehand and turn its Data Roaming on in arrivals. The city centre is a short drive away, and you’ll have maps for the ride in.
Is there a Brunei eSIM with a phone number?
Not from us. Our plan is data only, so you won’t get a local number, calls or SMS. Hotels, drivers and tour guides are easy to reach on WhatsApp, and your home SIM can stay active in dual-SIM for texts.
Which network will my phone be on in Brunei?
UNN (Unified National Networks), Brunei’s national mobile network, on 4G/LTE. The eSIM uses that network only.
Does the eSIM Brunei plan work in Miri, Limbang or Labuan?
No. All three are in Malaysia: Miri and Limbang in Sarawak, Labuan an island territory off the coast. The plan stops at the checkpoint, so add our Malaysia eSIM before you cross. Both can sit on the same phone, and you switch the data line at the border.
What is the best eSIM for Brunei?
For a short visit, one that’s on UNN and installed before you fly. Ours connects to it over 4G/LTE, with plans from 1 GB for 7 days up to 20 GB for 30 days and no ID at checkout. It works in Brunei only, so if your trip continues into Sarawak or Sabah, pair it with a Malaysia plan.
