Before you buy your French Guiana eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM French Guiana: Digicel data on the coast, none in the forest
Our eSIM French Guiana plan connects to Digicel on 4G/LTE and follows the shape of the country: good along the Atlantic coast, absent in the Amazon interior.
The visitors here are an unusual mix. Engineers and contractors fly in to Kourou, others come for a launch, and many are visiting family from mainland France. If you’re in that last group, look at your French plan first, as many include French Guiana in their roaming allowance. Non-French plans often leave it out, and from outside the EU you’ll be roaming at whatever your provider charges.
Coverage follows the coastal road. Cayenne, Kourou and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni are fine; the stretches between them less so. Once you fly to Saül or take a pirogue up the Maroni, this plan has no signal at all. Load offline maps and let your lodge know when to expect you.
A French Guiana eSIM is data only. There’s no local number, so calls go over WhatsApp or FaceTime and your home SIM stays active for texts. It also stops at both borders: in Oiapoque, over the bridge from Saint-Georges, use our Brazil eSIM. A local SIM card means a shop visit with ID, which can make sense for a long posting but rarely for a two-week trip.

French Guiana Travel and Connectivity Guide
Where Digicel reaches, and what happens near the border rivers
Coverage areas
Most people in French Guiana live on a narrow strip along the Atlantic, and that’s where the Digicel signal is. Cayenne, Rémire-Montjoly and Matoury (where the airport is) are well covered, and so is Kourou, home of the space centre. Heading west on the RN1 through Sinnamary and Iracoubo to Mana and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, the towns have signal but the empty stretches between them may not. East of Cayenne, the RN2 to Saint-Georges runs through forest for much of its length, with long gaps. Inland there’s no coverage on this plan. Saül, Maripasoula and the upper Maroni and Oyapock rivers are all off the map as far as data goes.
eSIM French Guiana network and the border rivers
Digicel is the only network this eSIM uses, over 4G/LTE. The two places people cross the border are both on rivers, and there your phone can pick up a foreign signal. At Saint-Laurent it’s Suriname’s, across the Maroni. Brazil’s reaches over the Oyapock at Saint-Georges. If data stops by the water, open the network settings for the eSIM line, turn off automatic selection and choose Digicel. Speed isn’t capped by us. It comes down to signal, location and your handset.
Data usage tips
• 1–3 GB: a week based in Cayenne or a short work trip to Kourou, mostly maps, email and WhatsApp
• 5–10 GB: two weeks driving the coast to Saint-Laurent and Awala-Yalimapo, with a passenger on your hotspot
• 20 GB: a month-long posting in Kourou, video calls most days, or a laptop tethered in the evenings
Tourist highlights
If your dates line up with a launch, watch it from near the Guiana Space Centre outside Kourou; on other days the space museum there fills a morning. Boats leave Kourou for the Îles du Salut, where you can walk through the old penal colony buildings on Île Royale and look across the channel to Devil’s Island. The story continues at the Camp de la Transportation in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, where convicts shipped from France first arrived. In nesting season, leatherback turtles come ashore at night on the beaches of Awala-Yalimapo. The Hmong village of Cacao is best on a Sunday, for its market. Night boat trips in the Kaw marshes go looking for caimans. Back in Cayenne, walk up to Fort Cépérou for the view and finish at the central market.
Apps that help
A hire car is how most visitors get around, as buses are scarce and shared taxis between towns leave when they’re full rather than on a timetable. Download offline maps in Google Maps before driving the RN1 or RN2, because the gaps between towns are long. WhatsApp is the easy way to reach guides, pirogue operators and guesthouses. Cards work in hotels and supermarkets in Cayenne and Kourou; carry euros in cash for markets, Cacao and anything along the rivers. If you’re coming for a launch, keep an eye on the schedule, since dates often slip by a day or more.
Roaming tips
French Guiana is a French department inside the EU, and a good number of French and EU plans count it in their roaming allowance. Plenty of non-French plans don’t, so read your tariff before you go. From the US, Canada, the UK, Brazil or Suriname you’ll be roaming at your provider’s rates. Set the Esimy eSIM as your mobile-data line with Data Roaming on, and keep your home SIM active for calls and texts with its data roaming off. Coverage ends at the borders. Across the Oyapock bridge in Oiapoque, switch to our Brazil eSIM; if you’re connecting through Paris, our France eSIM handles mainland France.
Why travelers choose Esimy French Guiana
- Digicel 4G/LTE in Cayenne, Kourou and the towns on the coast road
- Ready before you leave Paris, so there’s no shop to find in Cayenne
- Days are counted from your first connection in French Guiana
- A colleague’s laptop can share your data by hotspot
- Run low in Kourou and you can top up from the dashboard or app, no new QR code
Best time to visit
- August to November: the long dry season, the easiest months for the coast road, river trips and forest walks
- March: a short break in the rains that locals call the petit été de mars (little March summer)
- April to July: leatherback nesting season at Awala-Yalimapo, though this is also the wettest part of the year
- January to February: Cayenne’s carnival, with weekend parades and Touloulou balls running up to Ash Wednesday

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in French Guiana
Will my phone work with the eSIM?
If it supports eSIM and isn’t locked to a carrier, it should; recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models do. Our list of supported devices covers the rest.
Can colleagues or family use my data through a hotspot?
They can. Tethering is allowed on every plan, which helps when several people share one car on the coast road. Pick a bigger plan if a laptop will be connected every day.
How much data do I need, and can I top up or get unlimited?
A week in Cayenne and Kourou with maps and messaging fits in 1 to 3 GB. Two weeks driving the coast, or a work trip with video calls, is closer to 5 to 10 GB, and long postings or laptop work suit 20 GB. Unlimited data isn’t offered for French Guiana, but you can add more to the same eSIM from your dashboard or the app whenever you run low.
How do I set up an eSIM for French Guiana?
- Buy online with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You won’t be asked for ID, and the QR code lands in your inbox as soon as you’ve paid.
- While you’re still on home Wi-Fi, add the eSIM from your phone’s settings (Cellular on an iPhone, the SIM or mobile network menu on Android).
- In French Guiana, switch on Data Roaming for the eSIM and set it as your mobile-data line. The APN fills itself in.
- Your days start counting at that first connection.
Is a French Guiana SIM card from a shop in Cayenne a better deal?
For a stay of several months, it can be. Buying one means a shop visit with ID, and the card takes your home SIM’s place unless your phone holds two. For a launch trip or a couple of weeks on the coast, the eSIM is already working when you land and your own number stays live. On a French plan, check your tariff first. You may not need either.
Does it work in Brazil across the Oyapock bridge, or in Suriname?
No to both. Cross the Oyapock bridge from Saint-Georges into Oiapoque and you’re in Brazil, where our Brazil eSIM takes over. Albina, across the Maroni from Saint-Laurent, is in Suriname, and the eSIM won’t connect there either. Near both rivers, select Digicel by hand if your phone wanders onto a foreign network.
Will I have data in Kourou for a rocket launch, and on the Îles du Salut?
In Kourou, yes, since the town is on the coastal network. The Îles du Salut lie an hour or more offshore by boat, and you may pick up a mainland signal there, but treat it as a bonus. Island trips can be cancelled around launches, because the islands sit under the flight path, so confirm with your boat operator.
Is there signal on the coast road and in the interior?
Along the RN1 between Cayenne, Kourou and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, the towns have signal and some stretches between them don’t. The RN2 to Saint-Georges crosses long sections of forest with gaps. Inland, this plan has no coverage at all. Flights to Saül or Maripasoula and pirogue trips on the Maroni or the Oyapock happen offline, so save maps and bookings before you leave the coast.
Will it work when I land at Félix Éboué Airport?
Yes, the airport at Matoury, a short drive from Cayenne, is inside Digicel’s coverage. If you installed the eSIM before the flight, it should connect as soon as Data Roaming is on for that line.
Can I get a French Guiana eSIM with a phone number?
Not with this plan. It’s data only, with no local number and no calls or SMS over the mobile network. WhatsApp works well for reaching guides and guesthouses, and your home SIM can stay on in dual-SIM for texts and one-time codes.
Is it a Digicel eSIM? Which network does it connect to?
It runs on Digicel’s 4G/LTE network, the only one this plan uses in French Guiana. You buy it from Esimy online rather than in a shop, so there’s nothing to register. Speeds aren’t throttled on our side.
What is the best eSIM for French Guiana?
It depends where the trip goes. For a launch, a work week in Kourou or a drive along the coast, ours runs on Digicel 4G/LTE and is online from the moment you land, with plans from 1 GB for 7 days to 20 GB for 30 days. The clock doesn’t start until the eSIM first connects here. Heading up the Maroni or out to Saül? This plan has no coverage there, so it won’t help.
