Before you buy your Gabon eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM Gabon: Airtel 4G for Libreville, Port-Gentil and Franceville
If you’re flying in for work, an eSIM Gabon plan from Esimy has your email and WhatsApp running before you leave Léon-Mba International Airport in Libreville.
The eSIM connects to Airtel Gabon on 4G/LTE. Signal is good across central Libreville, the Bord de Mer, the airport and the port at Owendo. Port-Gentil, the oil town on Mandji Island that you reach by plane or boat, is well covered too, and Lambaréné, Franceville and Moanda have signal in town.
Be realistic about the rest. Gabon is mostly rainforest, and between towns the signal comes and goes for long stretches of road and railway. Inside Loango, Lopé and Pongara national parks you’ll have little or nothing, and most offshore platforms sit beyond the range of land masts. Save offline maps and the documents you need before a field trip.
This Gabon eSIM is data only, with no local number, so calls run through WhatsApp, Teams or FaceTime and your home SIM stays on for SMS. Plans range from 1 GB for 7 days to 20 GB for 30 days, with the clock starting at first connection in Gabon. No ID check is needed. Top-ups go on the same eSIM from your dashboard or the app. It won’t connect in Cameroon or Congo, so for a regional trip, see if our Global eSIM covers your route.

Gabon Travel and Connectivity Guide
Where the signal holds in Gabon, and where it stops
Towns covered by eSIM Gabon
Libreville and its suburbs: the city center, the Bord de Mer, Quartier Louis, Glass, Akanda and the port and industrial zone at Owendo, plus Léon-Mba International Airport. Port-Gentil on Mandji Island. Lambaréné on the Ogooué, Franceville and Moanda in Haut-Ogooué, Oyem in the north, and the other larger towns. Between towns, signal follows the villages along the main roads and drops out for long stretches.
Network
Connects to Airtel Gabon on 4G/LTE. Libreville and Port-Gentil get the best signal, and it holds up in the larger towns. Away from them it fades fast: forest sections of the national roads can go a long way without a mast, and the Transgabonais railway passes through similar gaps. Inside Loango, Lopé and Pongara national parks, expect little or no signal, and most offshore platforms are out of range of land networks.
Data usage tips
• 1–3 GB: a few days of meetings in Libreville with email, WhatsApp and maps
• 5–10 GB: a two-week rotation with daily video calls, cloud documents and some hotspot use
• 20 GB: a month on the ground, a laptop on hotspot most days, or streaming in the evenings
Tourist highlights
Loango National Park, where forest elephants, buffalo and the odd hippo come down to the beaches, usually reached by small plane or boat; Lopé National Park, a UNESCO site of savanna and rainforest known for its mandrills, with its own stop on the Transgabonais; Ivindo National Park and the Kongou Falls; leatherback turtles nesting at Pongara, across the estuary from Libreville, roughly from November to February; weekend beaches at Pointe Denis; the Albert Schweitzer Hospital and museum in Lambaréné; and the mangroves of Akanda just north of the capital.
Apps that help
Expect drivers, hotels and local contacts to reach you on WhatsApp rather than by email or phone. Google Maps covers Libreville and Port-Gentil; save offline maps of any route you’ll drive and any park you’re visiting. Don’t count on ride-hailing apps: most business visitors use a company driver, a hotel car or a taxi the hotel arranges. Airtel Money is widely used for local payments but needs a Gabonese line, which a data-only eSIM doesn’t give you. Carry some cash in Central African CFA francs (XAF), which aren’t the same currency as the West African francs used in Senegal or Côte d’Ivoire, and use cards at the larger hotels.
Roaming tips
A two-week rotation on your home plan’s roaming rates can turn into a painful invoice: Gabon isn’t part of the EU roaming zone, and most home plans bill it at international rates. Put mobile data on the Esimy line, with Data Roaming enabled for it, then turn Data Roaming off for your home SIM so it stays reachable for calls and SMS without using data. The plan covers Gabon only. A trip that carries on to Cameroon, Congo or São Tomé needs another plan, so check if our Global eSIM covers your route.
Why travelers choose Esimy Gabon
- Uses Airtel Gabon’s 4G/LTE in Libreville, Port-Gentil and the larger towns
- Bought and installed before departure, with no ID and no SIM counter at Léon-Mba
- Hotspot allowed, so your laptop gets online when the hotel Wi-Fi doesn’t
- Validity runs from first connection in Gabon, not from the booking date
- Top-ups go on the same eSIM, and your usual number stays on for calls and SMS
Best time to visit
- June to September: the long dry season, cooler and often overcast, with the easiest road and park travel; humpback whales pass along the coast
- December to February: a shorter, drier spell between the rains, when leatherback turtles nest on beaches such as Pongara
- October to November and March to May: the wettest months, with heavy storms and muddy roads inland; business travel carries on as normal

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in Gabon
Is a local Gabon SIM card worth it?
Only if you’re there for months, or need a Gabonese number for clients or Airtel Money. Registration takes your passport and a visit to an operator shop, which is hard to fit around a packed first day. On a two- or three-week rotation, the eSIM is already working when you land.
Does it work in Cameroon, Congo or Equatorial Guinea?
No, it’s Gabon only. For a trip through several countries, check if our Global eSIM covers your route. Both eSIMs can live on one phone; change the data line at each border.
Which phones work, and what about a company phone?
If it supports eSIM and no carrier has locked it, it’ll work: a recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel, for example. Full details are on the list of supported devices. If your employer manages the phone, ask IT before you travel if adding an eSIM is allowed.
Can I run my laptop off the hotspot?
Hotspot and tethering are both allowed, and they make a good backup when hotel or office Wi-Fi is slow or down. Laptop video calls eat data, so the 10 GB and 20 GB plans make more sense.
Which eSIM Gabon plan suits a business trip?
- A week of email, WhatsApp and maps: 1 to 3 GB
- Daily video calls over a two-week rotation: 5 or 10 GB
- A laptop running off the phone’s hotspot most days: 20 GB
There’s no unlimited plan for Gabon. If you run short, top up the same eSIM.
My trip got extended. Can I top up?
Add data to the same eSIM from your Esimy dashboard or the app; you don’t need a new QR code. Heading out to a park or a remote site? Top up in town first.
How do I install the eSIM before a trip to Gabon?
Pay online, with no ID check. Your QR code comes by email straight after. Scan it at home on Wi-Fi, under Add eSIM in your Mobile or Cellular settings. When you land, switch Data Roaming on for the Esimy line and set it as the line for mobile data. You won’t need to enter an APN, and validity starts with that first connection in Gabon.
What is eSIM Gabon coverage like outside Libreville and Port-Gentil?
Patchy, and you should plan around it. Larger towns such as Lambaréné, Franceville, Moanda and Oyem have signal, but the roads between them cross long stretches of forest with none, and the Transgabonais railway has similar gaps. In Loango, Lopé and Pongara national parks, expect little or no signal. Before you set off, save offline maps, phone numbers and any files you’ll need.
Does it work as soon as I land at Léon-Mba International Airport?
It will, if it’s installed on Wi-Fi before you leave home. Turn on Data Roaming for the Esimy line after landing in Libreville, so you can tell your contact you’ve arrived while you’re still in the terminal.
Do I get a Gabonese phone number?
No. There’s no local number, and it can’t place calls or send SMS. Keep your usual number on in dual-SIM for SMS codes and take calls over WhatsApp or Teams.
Is this an Airtel Gabon eSIM?
It uses Airtel Gabon’s 4G/LTE network, and no other. We don’t slow it down on our side, so speed comes down to signal strength, where you are and your phone.
What is the best eSIM for Gabon?
On most work trips, it’s the one that keeps your phone and laptop online in Libreville and Port-Gentil without any paperwork. Esimy’s eSIM connects to Airtel Gabon on 4G/LTE, needs no ID, allows hotspot and takes top-ups on the same eSIM. Plans go from 1 GB (7 days) to 20 GB (30 days), and validity is counted from the first time it connects in Gabon.
