Before you buy your Ghana eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM Ghana: AT 4G data for Accra, Kumasi and the coast
With an eSIM Ghana plan from Esimy, your phone picks up 4G on AT (formerly AirtelTigo) as soon as you turn on roaming at Kotoka International Airport.
December is the big month. Flights into Accra fill up with people coming home and visitors chasing Detty December, and nobody wants to start the trip in a phone-shop queue. Install this Ghana eSIM on Wi-Fi before you leave; the days only start counting when it first connects in Ghana.
AT covers Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and the coast road past Cape Coast and Elmina well. Up north around Tamale and Mole National Park, and in parts of the Volta Region, the signal thins out, so download offline maps first. Plans go from 1 GB for 7 days up to 20 GB for 30 days.
You don’t get a Ghanaian number with it, which rules out calls, SMS and mobile money. Staying for months, or need a local number for a landlord or a bank? Then a Ghanaian SIM registered with your ID is the better buy. On a holiday, WhatsApp does the calling home, your own SIM stays on for texts, and you can add data to the same eSIM later. If you’re carrying on east or south afterwards, our eSIM for Kenya and eSIM for South Africa cover the next leg.

Ghana Travel and Connectivity Guide
Signal, ride apps and MoMo: the practical side of a Ghana trip
Coverage areas
Accra is the strongest: Osu, Labadi, Airport Residential, East Legon, Jamestown, the Makola Market area and Kotoka International Airport. Kumasi and Takoradi have good 4G, as do Tema, Cape Coast, Elmina and the coast road west towards Busua. Coverage gets thinner in the Northern and Upper regions, around Mole National Park, in parts of the Volta Region and inside Kakum’s forest.
Network
Connects to AT on 4G/LTE. AT is the network that was called AirtelTigo until it changed its name in June 2023. Coverage is good in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and along the coast road through Cape Coast and Elmina. It thins out in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions, on the roads to Mole National Park, in the hills around Wli Falls and inside Kakum’s rainforest, so expect gaps there. Speed isn’t capped by us; what you get depends on signal, where you are and your handset.
eSIM Ghana data usage tips
• 1–3 GB: a long weekend in Accra, or a short work trip with email, maps and Bolt
• 5–10 GB: two or three weeks of Detty December parties, beach days, Instagram stories and video calls home
• 20 GB: a month or longer, remote work from Accra, or sharing a hotspot with family
Tourist highlights
Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, the old slave forts on the Central Region coast; the canopy walkway in Kakum National Park; Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Jamestown’s lighthouse and Makola Market in Accra; Labadi Beach; Kejetia Market and Manhyia Palace in Kumasi; elephants at Mole National Park; Wli Falls and Mount Afadja in the Volta Region; surf and quiet beaches at Busua.
Apps that help
Bolt, Uber and Yango for rides around Accra; agree the pickup spot in the app chat, because directions in Ghana often go by landmarks rather than street numbers. Google Maps works well in the cities and on main roads, but download offline maps before heading north. Ghanaians pay for a lot with mobile money (MoMo), and you need a registered local SIM to open a wallet, so carry cedis and use cards in hotels, malls and larger restaurants.
Roaming tips
Home-network roaming in Ghana tends to cost a lot on UK, US and European plans, and Ghana isn’t in the EU roaming zone. Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi the day before you fly. After landing, turn on Data Roaming for the Esimy line, make it your mobile-data line and switch data roaming off on your home SIM, which can stay on for calls and bank texts. The plan works in Ghana only: if you cross into Togo at Aflao for a day in Lomé, it stops working at the border.
Why travelers choose Esimy Ghana
- Online in the Terminal 3 arrivals hall at Kotoka, before you walk out to find your driver
- No Ghana Card, no passport scan, no SIM registration
- AT 4G/LTE in Accra, Kumasi and along the coast road
- Validity starts when you first connect in Ghana, so buying early costs you no days
- Hotspot allowed and top-ups on the same eSIM, while your home number stays on
Best time to visit
- November to March: the main dry season; Harmattan winds bring dust and haze from about December to February
- December: Detty December in Accra, with concerts, beach parties and Christmas visits; flights and rooms book up early
- April to July, plus a shorter spell around September and October: the rainy seasons in the south, while the north has one longer wet season mid-year and dirt roads to Mole can be hard going

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in Ghana
Ghana SIM card or eSIM: which suits a visit?
For a few weeks, the eSIM is quicker: no shop visit, no passport scan, and your home SIM stays in the phone. A Ghana SIM card makes sense if you’re staying for months, want MoMo or need a local number for deliveries and bank accounts. Rules for visitors’ SIM registration have changed more than once, so ask the network what applies before you count on one for a long stay.
Which phones work with the eSIM?
Unlocked phones with eSIM support, including recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models. Check our list of supported devices before you buy.
Can I use it as a hotspot?
Yes, tethering is allowed. Share it with a laptop or a travel companion, but keep an eye on the data counter, because hotspot use adds up quickly.
Is 3 GB enough for Ghana, or do I need unlimited data?
For a week in Accra with maps, Bolt and WhatsApp, 3 GB is usually plenty, and 1 GB covers a long weekend. Two or three weeks of beach days, photos and video calls fit 5 or 10 GB. Staying a month, or working on a laptop over hotspot? Take 20 GB. We don’t sell unlimited data for Ghana, so if the 20 GB runs out, you top up.
Can I add more data later?
You can, from your Esimy dashboard or the app. The data goes onto the eSIM already in your phone, so there’s nothing new to scan. Useful if December turns into mid-January.
How do I get an eSIM in Ghana and activate it?
- Order online. No ID is needed, and the QR code is emailed straight after payment.
- On Wi-Fi, open Settings > Mobile/Cellular > Add eSIM and scan the code. At home, the day before you fly, is easiest.
- After landing in Ghana, switch Data Roaming on for the eSIM line and pick it for mobile data. The APN sets itself.
- Your days count from the first connection in Ghana.
Does eSIM Ghana work in the north and at Mole National Park?
Mostly, but with gaps. Around Tamale, on the roads to Mole National Park and in the hills near Wli Falls, AT’s signal is weaker than on the coast, and inside Kakum or Mole it may drop out altogether. Download Google Maps offline and save your bookings before you head out.
Will eSIM Ghana work at Kotoka Airport in Accra?
It should be working before you reach baggage claim at Terminal 3, provided you installed it on Wi-Fi first and switch on Data Roaming for the eSIM line after landing. That’s enough to book a Yango or Bolt, or to tell your family you’re through immigration.
Is this an MTN or Telecel eSIM for Ghana?
Neither. The eSIM runs on AT, the network known as AirtelTigo until 2023. If you need an MTN or Telecel number, for mobile money for example, buy a SIM from that network in Ghana and register it: Ghanaians use the Ghana Card and visitors their passport.
Does the Ghana eSIM have a phone number?
There’s no Ghanaian number on it. The plan is data only, without calls or SMS, so you can’t open a mobile money wallet with it either. Use WhatsApp or FaceTime for calls, and leave your home SIM on in dual-SIM for texts and bank codes.
Is eSIM available in Ghana?
It is, on any eSIM-capable phone. Buy ours before you travel and install it at home, and it’s ready when you land in Accra.
What is the best eSIM for Ghana?
Start with the network and the validity. Esimy’s eSIM connects to AT on 4G/LTE, and plans last 7 days (1 GB) or 30 days (3 to 20 GB), counted from your first connection in Ghana. Top-ups go onto the same eSIM, and hotspot is allowed. If most of your trip is in the north, bear in mind that AT’s signal there is thinner than in Accra.
