Before you buy your Paraguay eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM Paraguay: Personal 4G/LTE for the busy east, with gaps in the Chaco
The eSIM Paraguay plan from Esimy runs on Personal, the 4G/LTE network operated by Núcleo S.A., and it’s live as soon as you land at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport if you installed it at home. There’s no SIM kiosk to hunt for, and your own number stays active alongside it.
Most Paraguayans, and most of what visitors come to see, are in the east: Asunción and its lake towns, the Jesuit missions of Trinidad and Jesús near Encarnación, the Itaipú Dam and the shops of Ciudad del Este. Signal there is solid. Then there’s the Chaco. Past the Mennonite towns around Filadelfia, coverage drops to almost nothing for long stretches, so save offline maps and tell someone your route.
One thing catches people out. Iguazú Falls aren’t in Paraguay; they sit on the border between Argentina and Brazil, a short drive from Ciudad del Este. This plan stops at the Friendship Bridge, so for Foz do Iguaçu you’ll need our Brazil eSIM, and for Puerto Iguazú and the Argentine side of the falls, the Argentina eSIM. Posadas, across the river from Encarnación, is Argentina too.
It’s a data-only eSIM with no Paraguayan number. WhatsApp handles messages and calls here as it does across the region. Tethering is fine, and if price-checking in Ciudad del Este eats your data, top up the same eSIM.

Paraguay Travel and Connectivity Guide
Two rivers, three borders and a lot of empty Chaco
Coverage areas
Greater Asunción, including Luque (home to the airport), San Lorenzo, Lambaré and Fernando de la Mora; the lake towns of San Bernardino and Areguá; Encarnación and the Ruta 6 corridor north toward Ciudad del Este; Ciudad del Este, Hernandarias and Presidente Franco along the Paraná; and regional centres such as Coronel Oviedo, Villarrica, Concepción and Pedro Juan Caballero. In the Chaco, signal clusters around Filadelfia, Loma Plata and Neuland and along parts of the Transchaco highway, with long empty gaps in between.
Network
Connects to Personal (Núcleo S.A.) on 4G/LTE. That’s a single network, so where Personal is weak there’s nothing to fall back on. The eastern half of Paraguay, where most people live, is well served. The Chaco is the big exception. Away from the Mennonite towns and the main highway you can drive for a long time with no bars at all, and the far north-west toward Bolivia is emptier still. Signal can also be thin on remote estancias and along quieter stretches of river. We don’t throttle; signal, location and your phone set the speed.
Sizing an eSIM Paraguay plan
• 1–3 GB: three or four days in Asunción, a shopping run to Ciudad del Este, or a stopover on the way between Brazil and Argentina
• 5–10 GB: two weeks taking in Encarnación, the missions and Itaipú, with photos, video calls and ride apps
• 20 GB: a month or more, remote work from Asunción, or a laptop running off your phone
Tourist highlights
In Asunción, the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes, the Palacio de López, the painted lanes of Loma San Jerónimo and the riverside Costanera; Areguá’s pottery and strawberries, and the lakeshore at San Bernardino on Ypacaraí; the Jesuit reductions of Santísima Trinidad del Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue near Encarnación, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites; Encarnación’s river beaches and its summer carnival; the Itaipú Dam at Hernandarias and the Saltos del Monday outside Ciudad del Este; and the Mennonite colonies of the central Chaco around Filadelfia.
Apps that help
Bolt, Uber and the local app MUV for rides in Asunción; PedidosYa for food delivery; Google Maps or Waze for driving; and WhatsApp, which almost everyone uses, from hotel desks to market traders. Cards work in malls, hotels and larger restaurants in Asunción and Ciudad del Este. Carry guaraníes in cash for buses, small shops and anywhere in the countryside.
Roaming tips
A lot of visitors arrive overland: across the Friendship Bridge from Foz do Iguaçu, over the San Roque González de Santa Cruz bridge from Posadas into Encarnación, or by bus from Bolivia through the Chaco. Near those bridges your phone can latch onto a Brazilian or Argentine network, and this plan covers Paraguay only, so pick the right eSIM for mobile data as you cross. In Pedro Juan Caballero the avenue separating it from Ponta Porã is the border itself. Once you’re in Paraguay, put Data Roaming on for the Esimy line and off for your home SIM, which keeps handling calls and texts.
Why travelers choose Esimy Paraguay
- Connects to Personal’s 4G/LTE network in Asunción, Encarnación and Ciudad del Este
- Ready at Silvio Pettirossi Airport, with no registration counter to find
- Fits alongside a Brazil or Argentina eSIM if you’re crossing at Foz do Iguaçu or Posadas
- Validity starts at your first connection inside Paraguay
- Hotspot allowed, and top-ups go onto the eSIM you already have
Best time to visit
- May to September: the cooler, drier months, best for the Chaco and long days at the missions
- December to February: very hot, with Encarnación’s beaches and carnival at their busiest, and tereré (cold-brewed yerba mate) passed around everywhere
- Semana Santa (Holy Week): families head out of the cities and chipa is on every table

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in Paraguay
Is my phone compatible?
Any unlocked phone that supports eSIM, which covers recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models and many more. See the list of supported devices if you’re not sure.
Can I tether my laptop?
Hotspot is allowed. Keep an eye on your balance when you use it, since a laptop syncing photos or installing updates can burn through a gigabyte quickly.
Which plan should I buy for Paraguay? Is unlimited available?
- 1 GB, 7 days: a border hop or a couple of days in Ciudad del Este
- 3 GB, 30 days: a week around Asunción and the lake towns
- 5 or 10 GB, 30 days: a longer loop through Encarnación, the missions and the Chaco
- 20 GB, 30 days: working remotely or tethering a laptop
- No unlimited plan: 20 GB is the top size, and top-ups add more
Can I add more data later?
Any time, from the Esimy dashboard or the app. You keep the same eSIM and don’t need another QR code.
How do I set it up?
Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay and the QR code lands in your inbox right away. Go to Settings, then Mobile (or Cellular), then Add eSIM, and scan it while on Wi-Fi. When you arrive, turn on Data Roaming for the new line and pick it for mobile data. Your phone picks up the APN on its own, and validity starts at your first connection in Paraguay.
Paraguay SIM card or eSIM: which is easier?
For a short trip, the eSIM. Buying a Paraguay SIM card usually means visiting a phone shop or authorised kiosk and registering with your passport, and the new card takes your home SIM’s place in the tray. A local line does make sense if you’re moving to Paraguay or need a local number for banking and deliveries.
Does my eSIM Paraguay plan cover Iguazú Falls?
No. The falls are in Argentina and Brazil, not Paraguay. The plan works in Ciudad del Este but ends at the Friendship Bridge, so add our Brazil eSIM for Foz do Iguaçu or the Argentina eSIM for Puerto Iguazú and the Argentine park. Both can live on your phone next to this one; you swap the data line at the border.
How patchy is eSIM Paraguay coverage in the Chaco?
Very, outside the towns. Filadelfia, Loma Plata and Neuland have signal, as do parts of the Transchaco highway, but there are long stretches with none, and the further north-west you go toward Bolivia the emptier it gets. Download offline maps, carry water and fuel, and don’t count on the phone in an emergency out there.
Does the eSIM connect at Silvio Pettirossi Airport?
As long as it’s installed on Wi-Fi before you travel, it will. The airport is in Luque, just outside Asunción. Switch Data Roaming on for the eSIM, choose it for mobile data, and you can open a ride app before you reach the exit.
Is it a Personal eSIM?
It connects to Personal, the network run by Núcleo S.A., on 4G/LTE. You buy it from Esimy rather than in a Personal shop, which is why there’s no registration. How fast it runs depends on signal, where you are and your phone; we don’t slow it down.
Is there a Paraguay eSIM with a phone number?
Ours doesn’t come with one. It’s purely data, with no Paraguayan number, calls or SMS. WhatsApp is how Paraguayans message and call each other, hotels and drivers included, so for a visit that’s usually enough. Your bank’s codes still reach your home SIM if you leave it active in dual-SIM.
What is the best eSIM for Paraguay?
Check the network first. Esimy’s plan connects to Personal (Núcleo S.A.) on 4G/LTE, with good coverage in Asunción, Encarnación, Ciudad del Este and on the main roads in the east. Sizes go from 1 GB for 7 days to 20 GB for 30 days; tethering is allowed, and you can add data to the same eSIM later. Nobody asks for passport details.
