eSIM Republic of the Congo: Airtel 4G for Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire

With Esimy’s eSIM Republic of the Congo plan, your phone is on Airtel Congo’s 4G/LTE network as soon as you switch on data at Maya-Maya in Brazzaville or Agostinho-Neto in Pointe-Noire.

Scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before the trip. On arrival, switch on Data Roaming for the Esimy line and pick it for mobile data. Nothing else to configure. You skip the passport check and the shop visit a local SIM card needs.

Both main cities have solid coverage, and so do Dolisie and the larger towns. The RN1 between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire has long dead stretches, though, especially through the Mayombe hills. Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki have no signal at all. Save maps and files before you head out.

A short warning, because the names trip people up: this Congo Brazzaville eSIM covers the Republic of the Congo only. Kinshasa, across the river, is in a different country and needs its own plan. The eSIM is data only too, with no local number. Use WhatsApp for calls; your home SIM can stay on for SMS. For travel beyond Congo’s borders, look at our Global eSIM.

Republic of the Congo Travel and Connectivity Guide

Signal in Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire and the forests of the north

Coverage areas

In Brazzaville you’ll have signal on the Plateau, where the ministries are, and in Poto-Poto, Bacongo, Moungali, Ouenzé and Talangaï, along the Corniche and at Maya-Maya International Airport. Pointe-Noire is covered downtown, at the port, in the oil-service districts, along the beachfront and at Agostinho-Neto International Airport. Dolisie and Nkayi have signal in town, as do the larger northern towns such as Oyo, Owando and Ouesso. The big gaps are on the roads in between and in the northern forest.

Network

Connects to Airtel Congo on 4G/LTE. Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire get the steadiest signal. On the RN1 linking them, coverage comes and goes, with the longest dead patches in the Mayombe hills inland from Pointe-Noire, and the Congo-Océan railway runs through similar gaps. North of Owando it thins out further. In Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki national parks there’s no coverage, so lodge Wi-Fi, if any, is your only link. Offshore platforms are out of reach of land masts. We don’t throttle on our side; real speed depends on signal, location and your phone.

Data usage tips

• 1–3 GB: a few days of meetings in Brazzaville or a quick hop down to Pointe-Noire, mostly WhatsApp, email and maps
• 5–10 GB: a two- to four-week rotation in Pointe-Noire with Teams calls, shared drives and some evening video
• 20 GB: a month or more on the ground, or a hotspot keeping a few laptops online when the office link goes down

Tourist highlights

Brazzaville’s best-known sight is the Basilique Sainte-Anne with its green-tiled roof. Walk the Corniche in the evening, with Kinshasa’s towers across the water, then look in on the painters’ school in Poto-Poto, the Marché Total in Bacongo, the Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza memorial and the river rapids on the southern edge of town. Pointe-Noire has the long Côte Sauvage beach and the red cliffs of the Diosso Gorge, with Conkouati-Douli National Park further up the coast. Deep in the north, Odzala-Kokoua is known for western lowland gorillas and is usually reached by small plane, while Nouabalé-Ndoki is one of the most remote rainforest parks in Central Africa.

Apps that help

Expect most messages, from the hotel front desk to the driver waiting outside, to come in on WhatsApp. Google Maps covers both main cities well enough; download offline maps for the RN1, Dolisie and anywhere in the north before you leave Wi-Fi. Ride-hailing isn’t something to rely on, so use a company car, a hotel driver or a street taxi with the fare agreed before you get in. You’ll see Airtel Money signs on kiosks everywhere, but you can’t use it without a Congolese SIM registered in your name. Cash is in Central African CFA francs (XAF); the bigger hotels take cards. French is the working language, with Lingala and Kituba widely spoken.

eSIM Republic of the Congo roaming tips

European tariffs bill Congo as long-distance roaming, usually per megabyte. Install the Esimy eSIM before you board. After touchdown, enable Data Roaming on the eSIM line and set it as your mobile-data line. Your usual SIM can stay on for calls and SMS once its own data roaming is off. The plan doesn’t reach across the river to Kinshasa or over the borders to Gabon and Cameroon. Travelling on through the region? Our Global eSIM may cover the route.

Why travelers choose Esimy Republic of the Congo

  • Online at Maya-Maya or Agostinho-Neto without a stop at a SIM shop
  • Airtel Congo 4G/LTE in Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire and the larger towns
  • No ID needed, and the QR code is in your inbox minutes after payment
  • Validity begins at first connection in Congo, so you can buy before the rotation is confirmed

Best time to visit

  • June to September: the main dry season, cooler and often overcast, and the easiest time for road trips on the RN1 and travel to the parks
  • October to May: the rainy months, hot and humid, with heavy downpours that can slow road travel inland; oil and business work carries on as normal

eSIM FAQs

Common questions about using eSIM in Republic of the Congo

Which phones work?

Recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models work, along with other eSIM phones, as long as the phone isn’t carrier-locked. Our list of supported devices has the full rundown.

Is hotspot allowed?

It is, tethering included. Your phone can carry a work laptop through a Teams call when the hotel network is down, but a few of those will eat through 3 GB, so size up if you expect to do it often.

Can I top up without a new QR code?

Yes. Add data from your Esimy dashboard or the app and it goes straight onto the eSIM you already have. If you’re about to drive the RN1 or fly north, do it the night before in Brazzaville or Pointe-Noire.

Is 3 GB enough for a rotation in Pointe-Noire?

It depends on how much you work from the phone. For WhatsApp, email and maps over a week or so, 3 GB is plenty. A rotation of two to four weeks with Teams calls lands somewhere between 5 and 10 GB, and 20 GB suits a laptop on hotspot or a month in the country. We don’t sell an unlimited plan for Congo; top up instead.

How do I activate an eSIM Republic of the Congo plan?
  • Check out with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the QR code is emailed to you right away.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi, open Settings and add the eSIM by scanning the code.
  • Once in Congo, enable Data Roaming on the eSIM and use it for mobile data. You don’t need to enter an APN.
Is there signal on the RN1 and in the national parks?

On the RN1, partly: you’ll have signal near towns such as Dolisie and Nkayi and long gaps between them, the Mayombe section especially. In the north it gets sparse beyond Owando, and in Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki there’s none. Plan those days offline.

Will I have a Congolese phone number?

No. This is a data-only eSIM, so there’s no local number and no calls or texts on it. People here use WhatsApp for almost everything, and your usual number keeps working in dual-SIM for SMS. If a contract or long posting needs a local number, you’d have to buy a SIM card in town and register it with your passport.

Will it work at Maya-Maya Airport and in Pointe-Noire?

Yes, at both. If the eSIM is installed, turn on its Data Roaming after you land and it picks up Airtel in the terminal at Maya-Maya in Brazzaville or Agostinho-Neto in Pointe-Noire.

Which network does the Congo Brazzaville eSIM use?

Airtel Congo, on 4G/LTE. The eSIM stays on Airtel the whole time and won’t switch to a different operator, even in a spot where another network shows full bars.

Congo-Brazzaville or DR Congo: which country is this eSIM for?

The Republic of the Congo, often called Congo-Brazzaville. It’s easy to mix up with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, whose capital Kinshasa lies on the opposite bank of the Congo River; from the Corniche in Brazzaville you can see it. They are separate countries with separate networks. If you take the ferry from Le Beach to Kinshasa, this eSIM won’t work there, so buy a DR Congo plan too, install both before you cross and change the data line on arrival.

What is the best eSIM for the Republic of the Congo?

For most visitors, one that works in both Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire without a trip to a SIM shop. Our Republic of the Congo eSIM connects to Airtel Congo on 4G/LTE and needs no ID. You choose between 1 GB for 7 days and up to 20 GB for 30 days, and the clock starts at your first connection in Congo.
