eSIM Chad: Airtel 4G for N’Djamena and regional bases

Hassan Djamous International Airport is only a few minutes from central N’Djamena, and an eSIM Chad plan from Esimy has your phone on Airtel’s 4G network before you’ve left the building.

Coverage is strongest in the capital: along Avenue Charles de Gaulle, around the Grand Marché, in the ministry and embassy districts and by the Chari. In the south, Moundou and Sarh have signal in town, and so does Abéché, the main base for aid work in the east. Expect slower speeds there than in N’Djamena.

Plan for the gaps. Chad is huge, and away from the towns there’s little or no signal, particularly in the Sahara and at sites far from the main roads. Many teams use satellite connections in the field. Zakouma National Park has no coverage in the interior.

There’s no local number on the Chad eSIM, since it carries data only. WhatsApp and Teams handle calls, and your home SIM keeps receiving texts. Plans go up to 20 GB for 30 days, with no ID needed, and the days only begin counting once it first connects in Chad, not at purchase. One border catch: Kousséri, just over the river, is in Cameroon, and the plan won’t connect to networks there. For a multi-country trip, see our Global eSIM.

Chad Travel and Connectivity Guide

Signal in N'Djamena, the south and the east, and where it ends

Coverage areas

In N’Djamena, coverage runs through the centre around Avenue Charles de Gaulle and the Grand Marché, the ministry and embassy districts and the riverside along the Chari. Hassan Djamous International Airport sits right beside the city and is covered too. Down south, Moundou, Sarh, Doba and Bongor have signal in town. Abéché, the main hub for aid operations in the east, has it across the town, and so do other larger regional centres. Outside towns, expect signal only on parts of the main roads.

eSIM Chad network

Connects to Airtel Chad on 4G/LTE. The capital has the best signal by a clear margin. Moundou, Sarh and Abéché have coverage in town, but speeds there can be lower and less steady than in N’Djamena. Between towns it comes and goes. Across the Sahara in the north, the Ennedi and Tibesti, and many rural areas in the east and south, there’s nothing at all. Speed isn’t capped by us; what you see depends on signal, location and the handset.

Data usage tips

• 1–3 GB: about a week based in N’Djamena, if the phone is mostly for messages and email
• 5–10 GB: a few weeks split between the capital and a field base, with video calls and reports synced to the cloud
• 20 GB: a long assignment, a laptop on hotspot, or big downloads you’d rather not leave to guesthouse Wi-Fi

Tourist highlights

Free time in N’Djamena tends to revolve around the river. The Chari meets the Logone at the edge of the city, and an evening drink on a riverside terrace is a local habit worth picking up. The Grand Mosque stands near the Grand Marché, where traders sell cloth, leather goods and spices. Out in the southeast, Zakouma National Park is known for its elephant herds, big groups of buffalo and birdlife, with lodges that open in the dry season. The sandstone arches of the Ennedi plateau are famous but very remote. Read the latest travel advice before planning anything outside the capital.

Apps that help

Drivers and hotel staff in N’Djamena often reply with a WhatsApp voice note rather than a text, so keep notifications on. Street signs are scarce in N’Djamena, so Google Maps works best with saved pins for your office and guesthouse; grab the offline map of the city while you’re still on hotel Wi-Fi. Most visitors move by organisation vehicle or a driver the hotel arranges. Bring Central African CFA francs (XAF) in cash. Cards rarely work beyond the bigger hotels, and Airtel Money, which plenty of locals use, needs a Chadian number. French is the working language in offices; on the street and in the markets you’ll hear Chadian Arabic at least as often.

Roaming tips

On a European plan, Chad counts as international roaming, and the costs climb fast. Keep your home SIM switched on for calls and SMS, just with its data roaming off, and let the Esimy line carry mobile data with Data Roaming enabled. The eSIM works in Chad only. N’Djamena sits on the Cameroon border, and the plan won’t connect to Cameroonian networks in Kousséri across the river. The same applies in Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Libya and the Central African Republic. For a route through several countries, see if our Global eSIM covers it.

Why travelers choose Esimy Chad

  • Airtel Chad 4G/LTE, strongest in N’Djamena and present in the main towns
  • Live at Hassan Djamous Airport as soon as you land, with no SIM registration
  • Hotspot allowed, useful when guesthouse or office Wi-Fi gives out
  • Top-ups go on the same eSIM, so an extended assignment doesn’t mean a new setup

Best time to visit

  • November to February: the dry, cooler months, when a posting in N’Djamena is easiest to bear; harmattan haze can linger for days
  • March to May: the hottest stretch, when N’Djamena regularly passes 40°C
  • June to October: the rainy season, heaviest in the south, where roads to Moundou and Sarh get hard going and Zakouma’s lodges close

eSIM FAQs

Common questions about using eSIM in Chad

Will it work in Kousséri or elsewhere in Cameroon?

No. The plan covers Chad only and won’t connect to Cameroonian networks, even though Kousséri is just across the river from N’Djamena. The same goes for Niger, Nigeria, Sudan and the Central African Republic. Check if our Global eSIM covers your route instead.

Which phones can use it?

Any eSIM phone that isn’t carrier-locked, which takes in recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models. The rest are on our list of supported devices.

Does hotspot work?

It does, tethering included. Handy for a colleague’s phone, or for a laptop when the guesthouse Wi-Fi gives up.

Which plan fits a mission to Chad, and is unlimited data available?

Unlimited isn’t offered for Chad. The biggest plan is 20 GB, and you can top up beyond that. For sizing, a short mission based in N’Djamena usually fits in 3 to 5 GB. If you sync large reports or join video calls every day, take 10 GB, and go to 20 GB when your laptop will be tethered for most of a month.

Can I add data without buying a new eSIM?

Open your Esimy dashboard or the app, choose a plan and pay. The data is added to the eSIM already on your phone, with nothing to rescan.

How do I install the eSIM for Chad?
  • Order online and pay with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay; the QR code arrives by email at once, with no ID requested.
  • Install it over Wi-Fi by scanning the code in your phone’s eSIM settings.
  • In Chad, switch on Data Roaming for the eSIM and make it your data line. The APN is automatic.
Is there signal in Zakouma National Park?

Not in the park interior. Out on the tracks you should expect no mobile signal at all, so let people know when you’ll be offline, save offline maps first, and ask your lodge what connection it has.

Does the eSIM work outside N’Djamena, in Moundou or Abéché?

Uneven. Moundou, Sarh, Doba and Abéché have signal in town, often slower than in the capital. Along the roads it comes and goes, and in the Sahara, the Ennedi and many rural areas there’s none. Download maps, contacts and files before you head out.

Will it work at Hassan Djamous International Airport?

Yes. Set it up on Wi-Fi at home and switch the eSIM’s Data Roaming on once you’re off the plane. Because the airport is right next to the city, you’re inside N’Djamena’s best coverage from the moment you arrive.

Can I get a Chadian phone number, or should I buy a local SIM card?

There’s no number with this eSIM. It’s data only, without calls or SMS, so calls go over WhatsApp or Teams and your home SIM stays on for SMS codes. A Chad SIM card does give you a local number, but you’ll have to register it with your passport at a shop or agent. It’s mainly worth it for long assignments, or if you’ll use Airtel Money.

Is it an Airtel Chad eSIM?

It runs on Airtel Chad’s 4G/LTE network, and only that one. There’s no throttling from us; speed depends on the signal where you are and on your phone.

What is the best eSIM for Chad?

For a work trip, the one that’s already live in N’Djamena when you land and needs no paperwork. Ours runs on Airtel Chad’s 4G/LTE network. The smallest plan is 1 GB for a week and the largest 20 GB for 30 days, with validity starting only once it connects in Chad.
