eSIM Guadeloupe: Free Caraïbe data on both wings of the butterfly

Buy an eSIM Guadeloupe plan from Esimy and your phone joins Free Caraïbe’s 4G/LTE network the moment you land at Pôle Caraïbes, the airport just outside Pointe-à-Pitre.

Start with your home tariff. Guadeloupe is a French overseas region and part of the EU, so French plans and many other European ones bill it at home rates. Not all of them, though. Some non-French operators treat the French Caribbean as a separate zone, and anyone arriving from the UK, the US or Canada is roaming. If yours leaves the island out, that’s when a Guadeloupe eSIM is worth having.

On Grande-Terre, the flat eastern wing where most hotels are, signal is good in Le Gosier, Sainte-Anne and Saint-François and out to Pointe des Châteaux. Basse-Terre is mountainous and largely rainforest. Deshaies, Grande Anse and Malendure are fine. Under the trees at the Carbet Falls, along the Route de la Traversée and on the path up La Soufrière, signal comes and goes.

This plan carries no local number, and you can’t make calls or send SMS on it either. Ring home over WhatsApp and keep your own SIM switched on for bank codes. A Guadeloupe SIM card from a shop means bringing ID and freeing a SIM slot, so it’s better suited to long stays. Les Saintes and Marie-Galante are part of Guadeloupe and included; Martinique, Dominica, St Barth and St Martin aren’t.

Guadeloupe Travel and Connectivity Guide

Easy on Grande-Terre, patchier under Basse-Terre's rainforest

Coverage areas

Guadeloupe’s two main islands are split by a narrow channel, the Rivière Salée, and the Pointe-à-Pitre area sits right where they meet, with the airport in Les Abymes and the Jarry business zone in Baie-Mahault. Coverage is strongest there and across Grande-Terre: Le Gosier, Sainte-Anne, Saint-François, Le Moule and the drive out to Pointe des Châteaux. On Basse-Terre the coastal towns are covered, among them Deshaies, Bouillante, the town of Basse-Terre and Trois-Rivières. The middle of that island is national park. Expect gaps on the Route de la Traversée, on the forest trails and high on La Soufrière, whose summit is often lost in cloud.

Network

Everything runs over Free Caraïbe’s 4G/LTE network. The eSIM never hops to another one, so where Free Caraïbe is weak, you will be too. In practice that means the steep, wooded interior of Basse-Terre rather than the beach towns. Around Pointe-à-Pitre and along the Grande-Terre coast, maps and video calls should run without trouble. We don’t throttle it either; when things slow down, a weak signal or an older handset is the usual reason.

Data usage tips

• 1–3 GB: a week on Grande-Terre with Wi-Fi at the hotel or gîte, mostly maps, WhatsApp and restaurant searches
• 5–10 GB: two weeks covering both halves of the island by car, with ferry days to Les Saintes or Marie-Galante
• 20 GB: a month in a gîte, or evenings spent on a laptop over hotspot

Tourist highlights

Sunrise at Pointe des Châteaux, the rocky eastern tip of Grande-Terre, with a short climb to the cross for the view. The Mémorial ACTe in Pointe-à-Pitre, a museum of slavery and the slave trade built on the site of the old Darboussier sugar works, and the spice stalls of the Saint-Antoine market a few streets away. The beach at Sainte-Anne and the lagoon at Saint-François. Over on Basse-Terre: the hike up La Soufrière from the Bains Jaunes car park, the Carbet Falls, and the Cascade aux Écrevisses beside the Route de la Traversée. Plage de Grande Anse near Deshaies (fans of Death in Paradise will know the town). Snorkelling with turtles at Malendure and diving the Cousteau Reserve around the Îlets Pigeon. Then take a ferry, to Terre-de-Haut in Les Saintes for Fort Napoléon and the bay, or to Marie-Galante for empty beaches and rum distilleries.

Apps that help

Car hire is the norm, and most visitors collect one at the airport. Waze and Google Maps both work well, but save an offline map of Basse-Terre before heading into the park. Buses exist, though for a visitor they’re infrequent and hard to plan around. Ferries leave Pointe-à-Pitre for both Les Saintes and Marie-Galante, and Trois-Rivières has the short crossing to Les Saintes; book ahead in high season and keep the tickets on your phone where you can open them offline. Météo-France issues weather alerts, cyclone warnings included. Check that trails are open before driving up to the Carbet Falls, as closures after heavy rain are common. Cards work in supermarkets and restaurants, but carry some euros for markets, beach snack stands and the bokit sellers.

Roaming or an eSIM Guadeloupe plan?

Guadeloupe is an outermost region of the EU, so in principle EU roaming rules apply. Most French plans include it. Plenty of other EU tariffs do too, but some leave out the overseas departments or bill them separately, so read the small print before you fly. Visitors from the UK, Switzerland, the US or Canada are roaming. If you go with Esimy, the eSIM becomes your mobile-data line (Data Roaming on) and your home SIM stays active for calls and texts, its own data roaming off. Coverage ends at Guadeloupe’s shores. Breaking the journey in Paris? The France eSIM handles that bit, and for a longer trip through several countries, look at our Global eSIM and check its country list.

Why travelers choose Esimy Guadeloupe

  • Free Caraïbe 4G/LTE around Pointe-à-Pitre, across Grande-Terre and in Basse-Terre’s coastal towns
  • A set amount of data when your home plan doesn’t count the French Caribbean
  • Bought without ID and installed on Wi-Fi before the flight from Paris or Montreal
  • Your days don’t start until it connects in Guadeloupe
  • Hotspot allowed, and top-ups go onto the same eSIM

Best time to visit

  • December to May: the dry season locals call the carême, and the most popular months for beaches and hiking
  • January to Ash Wednesday: Carnival, with Sunday parades building up to Mardi Gras
  • Every four years in November: the Route du Rhum yacht race from Saint-Malo finishes in Pointe-à-Pitre
  • July to November: wetter and cyclone season, with the highest risk around August to October; Basse-Terre trails can close after storms

eSIM FAQs

Common questions about using eSIM in Guadeloupe

Which phones can use it?

eSIM-capable phones that aren’t locked to one carrier, including recent iPhones and Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models. Look yours up on our list of supported devices.

Is hotspot allowed?

It is. Share with a passenger’s phone in the car or a laptop at the gîte, and choose a larger plan if the laptop will be online every day.

Can I add more data later?

Yes, top up from your Esimy dashboard or the app. The extra data is added to the eSIM already on your phone, so you don’t scan anything new.

How much data will I use on a Guadeloupe holiday?

With Wi-Fi at your hotel or gîte, a week of maps and messaging fits in 1 to 3 GB. Two weeks driving both halves of the island, ferry days included, is nearer 5 to 10 GB. Pick 20 GB if you’ll work remotely or stream. That’s also the largest plan, as there’s no unlimited option for Guadeloupe.

How do I set up and activate it?
  • Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No ID is required, and the QR code is emailed as soon as payment goes through.
  • Scan it at home on Wi-Fi, under Cellular on an iPhone or the SIM or mobile network menu on Android.
  • On arrival, enable Data Roaming on the eSIM and pick it as your data line. APN settings fill in automatically, and your days start counting.
Does it work on Les Saintes and Marie-Galante, or in Martinique and Dominica?

Les Saintes, Marie-Galante and La Désirade belong to Guadeloupe, so the plan covers them, though signal on the smaller islands is less dependable than on the main pair. Martinique, Dominica, St Barth and St Martin are outside the plan, and it won’t connect there. For an island-hopping trip, see whether our Global eSIM lists the islands you need.

Is there signal on La Soufrière and at the Carbet Falls?

Patchy. Coverage weakens once you’re under the forest canopy or climbing, and near the summit of La Soufrière it’s unreliable. The walk to the Carbet Falls and the Route de la Traversée both have gaps. Save offline maps and let your gîte know your route before a long hike.

Does it connect at Pôle Caraïbes airport?

The airport sits in Les Abymes, a few minutes from Pointe-à-Pitre and well inside Free Caraïbe’s coverage. With the eSIM installed beforehand, switch on Data Roaming after landing and it should connect while you wait for your bags.

What network does my eSIM Guadeloupe plan join?

Free Caraïbe, on 4G/LTE, and no other. Speeds aren’t capped by us.

Will I get a local +590 number?

No. The plan carries data only, with no number, calls or SMS. Calls work over WhatsApp or FaceTime, and with your home SIM left on in dual-SIM, texts from your bank or hotel still come through.

Do I need an eSIM Guadeloupe plan if my contract includes EU roaming?

Possibly not. Guadeloupe is legally part of France and the EU, and most French plans, along with many EU ones, cover it. Some non-French providers exclude the overseas departments or charge for them separately, so look for Guadeloupe or the DOM in your tariff’s roaming list before you go. Coming from the UK, North America or another Caribbean island, you’ll almost certainly be roaming.

What is the best eSIM for Guadeloupe?

First, check if you need one at all. On a French plan you probably don’t. For everyone else, ours connects to Free Caraïbe on 4G/LTE and comes in sizes from 1 GB for 7 days up to 20 GB for 30 days, and the validity only begins once it connects in Guadeloupe. It’s data only, sold without ID, and you can add data to it later.
