eSIM Zambia: Airtel 4G for Lusaka, Livingstone and the road to the parks

Our eSIM Zambia plans connect to Airtel Zambia on 4G/LTE. Install yours on Wi-Fi at home, switch on data roaming after landing at Kenneth Kaunda International in Lusaka or Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International in Livingstone, and you’re online before the taxi rank.

Signal is good in Lusaka, in Livingstone and along most of the main roads between larger towns. The parks are another matter. On a game drive in South Luangwa, a canoe trip on the Lower Zambezi or out on Kafue’s Busanga Plains, expect thin coverage or none. Most lodges and camps have Wi-Fi, so download offline maps before you leave town and send your photos from camp.

Victoria Falls needs its own note. The falls sit on the border, and the plan works on the Zambian side: Livingstone, Knife-Edge Bridge and the viewpoints in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Cross the bridge into Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe, or join a day trip to Chobe in Botswana, and the Zambia eSIM stops working until you’re back.

This is a data-only plan without a Zambian number. WhatsApp takes care of calls and messages, and your home SIM still gets bank texts. The days start at your first connection in Zambia. Hotspot is allowed, and you can top up mid-trip. Connecting through Johannesburg or continuing to Dar es Salaam? Add our South Africa eSIM or Tanzania eSIM for that leg.

Zambia Travel and Connectivity Guide

Where the signal reaches, and where lodge Wi-Fi takes over

eSIM Zambia coverage areas

Lusaka (Cairo Road, Manda Hill, East Park, Kabulonga) and Kenneth Kaunda International Airport; Livingstone town, its airport and the Zambian side of Victoria Falls; Ndola and Kitwe on the Copperbelt; Siavonga on Lake Kariba; Chipata on the Great East Road; and the main highways between them. Inside South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue national parks, signal is thin or missing.

Network

Runs on Airtel Zambia’s 4G/LTE network. Lusaka, Livingstone and the Copperbelt towns get a strong signal, and it holds along most of the Lusaka–Livingstone road and the Great East Road, with some dead stretches between towns. Once you’re inside the big parks it fades fast. Camps and lodges usually have Wi-Fi, and that’s what you’ll use there. At Siavonga you’ll have signal, but out on Lake Kariba it can come and go. There’s no throttling from Esimy, so the limits are the local signal and your phone.

Data usage tips

• 1–3 GB: a few days in Lusaka with Google Maps, Yango and WhatsApp, or a short Livingstone stop for the falls
• 5–10 GB: two weeks combining Livingstone with a safari, when much of your uploading happens on camp Wi-Fi anyway
• 20 GB: work trips to Lusaka or the Copperbelt, long self-drive routes, or a laptop running on hotspot

Tourist highlights

Victoria Falls from the Zambian side: Knife-Edge Bridge, the trail down to the Boiling Pot and, roughly from mid-August to mid-January when the river is low, Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island. Sunset cruises on the Zambezi above the falls and white rhino walks in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Walking safaris in South Luangwa, a short flight from Lusaka to Mfuwe. Canoeing past hippos in Lower Zambezi National Park, the Busanga Plains in Kafue, and boat trips on Lake Kariba from Siavonga.

Apps that help

Yango is widely used for rides in Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe; in Livingstone and the safari towns, your hotel or lodge will usually book a taxi or transfer for you. Google Maps works in the cities, but download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before you drive to a park. Expect guides, drivers and camps to send pickup times on WhatsApp. Airtel Money and other mobile money services need a registered local SIM, so carry some kwacha for markets and small shops, and use a card at lodges and malls.

Roaming tips

European, UK and US operators tend to charge a lot for data in Zambia. Before landing, make the Esimy eSIM your mobile-data line and turn Data Roaming on for it, then disable it on your home SIM, which stays on for calls and texts. The plan covers Zambia only. It won’t connect in Zimbabwe, Botswana or Tanzania, so if the TAZARA train or a flight takes you on to Dar es Salaam, add a Tanzania eSIM before you go.

Why travelers choose Esimy Zambia

  • Runs on Airtel Zambia 4G/LTE in Lusaka, Livingstone and the Copperbelt
  • Installed before you fly, so there’s no SIM registration with your passport
  • Days count from first connection in Zambia, not from the purchase date
  • Share data with a laptop or a friend’s phone over hotspot
  • Add data in the Esimy app before heading into a park, no new QR code needed

Best time to visit

  • May to October (dry season): the main safari months, with game gathering around rivers and waterholes; September and October are the hottest
  • November to April (green season): rain, lush bush and fewer visitors; some camps close and park roads can become impassable
  • Victoria Falls: the flow peaks around March to May, when the spray can hide the view; by October and November the Zambian side can be close to dry

eSIM FAQs

Common questions about using eSIM in Zambia

Should I get a Zambia SIM card for tourists instead?

For a short trip the eSIM is less work. A local Zambia SIM card has to be registered with your passport at an operator shop or booth after you arrive, while the eSIM is set up before you fly. If you’re staying for months, or you want a Zambian number for mobile money such as Airtel Money, a local SIM is the better fit.

Which phones work with the eSIM?

Most recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models are compatible, as long as the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. For anything older or from another brand, our list of supported devices has the answer.

Is tethering allowed on the Zambia plan?

It is, which helps if you’re working from a Lusaka hotel or travelling with someone whose phone has no eSIM. A laptop uses data quickly, so go for a bigger plan if you’ll do this every day.

How many GB do I need for Zambia, and is there an unlimited plan?
  • 1 GB (7 days): a quick Livingstone stop for the falls, or a few days of meetings in Lusaka
  • 3 to 5 GB (30 days): one or two weeks including a safari, since camp Wi-Fi takes care of much of the bush time
  • 10 to 20 GB (30 days): business trips, long self-drive routes or a laptop on hotspot
  • Unlimited: not available for Zambia, but top-ups take you past 20 GB
What if I run out of data before a safari?

Add more from your Esimy dashboard or the app and it goes onto the eSIM you’re already using, no new QR code. Do it in town, before the park, while you still have signal or Wi-Fi.

How do I activate my eSIM when I arrive in Zambia?

Most of the work happens before you fly. Order online (card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, no ID) and the QR code lands by email as soon as you’ve paid. Scan it on Wi-Fi from the Add eSIM option in your phone settings. On arrival, turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM and set it as the line for mobile data. The APN fills itself in, and validity begins with that first connection in Zambia.

Does the eSIM Zambia plan work on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls, or in Chobe?

Only on the Zambian side. It works in Livingstone, at Knife-Edge Bridge and around Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, but in Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe the eSIM won’t connect. Day trips to Chobe in Botswana, over the Kazungula Bridge, are the same. For those days use hotel or lodge Wi-Fi, or bring a separate plan that covers Zimbabwe or Botswana.

Will I have signal on safari in South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi or Kafue?

Mostly not. Coverage is thin or absent inside the big parks and on some of the access roads. You’ll check messages and send photos on lodge or camp Wi-Fi, which most places offer. Before you leave Lusaka, Livingstone or Mfuwe, download offline maps and top up if you think you’ll need more data.

Will my eSIM Zambia plan work when I land in Lusaka or Livingstone?

Yes, at both Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka and Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International in Livingstone. Install it on Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch on Data Roaming for the eSIM line once you’re on the ground. That’s enough to message your driver or lodge from the arrivals hall.

Which network does it use? Is it an Airtel Zambia eSIM?

In a sense. It runs on Airtel Zambia’s 4G/LTE network, but you buy it from Esimy online rather than at an Airtel shop, so there’s nothing to register locally.

Does a Zambia eSIM come with a phone number?

It doesn’t. Zambia plans are data only, so there are no regular calls or SMS either. Guides and lodges mostly message on WhatsApp anyway, and you can reply over the eSIM. Your home SIM can stay active alongside it for bank codes.

What is the best eSIM for Zambia?

For Zambia, it depends how much of the trip happens in towns. Ours connects to Airtel Zambia on 4G/LTE, which covers Lusaka, Livingstone and most main roads well; deep in the parks the signal is thin or missing, so plan on camp Wi-Fi there. Plans run from 1 GB for 7 days to 20 GB for 30 days. There’s no ID check, you can tether, and topping up beats buying a second eSIM.
