eSIM Suriname: Digicel data for Paramaribo and the coast, with the interior offline

With an eSIM Suriname plan on your phone, you land at Johan Adolf Pengel airport in Zanderij already connected to Digicel Suriname, and your home number stays on for texts.

Plenty of people on the flights from Schiphol are going home rather than on holiday. If that’s you, look at your Dutch tariff before relying on it. Suriname is outside the EU, so roam-like-at-home doesn’t apply, and data is billed at your provider’s rest-of-world rate.

Our own prices are higher here as well, and the reason is dull: there’s a single network we can connect to, and its roaming rates are steep. That’s why there are three plans, with 5 GB the largest. For a month with family, take a mid-size plan, use their Wi-Fi at home and top up if you run low.

The signal lives on the coast: Paramaribo, Wanica, Commewijne and the East-West Link toward Nickerie and Albina. In the rainforest it’s gone. Upriver from Atjoni and at the interior lodges you’ll be offline. A Suriname SIM card from a Digicel shop suits long stays, but you’ll need ID and some patience. This Suriname eSIM is data only, with no local number, and covers Suriname alone.

Suriname Travel and Connectivity Guide

Fine on the coast, patchy at Brownsberg, gone past Atjoni

Coverage areas

Paramaribo and neighbouring Wanica are home to more than half of Suriname’s people, and that’s the area Digicel covers best: the historic centre and the Waterkant, the hotels and residential districts around the city, Lelydorp on the road south and Zanderij at the airport. Across the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, Commewijne has signal in Meerzorg and Nieuw Amsterdam and along most of the plantation roads near the villages. The East-West Link carries coverage west through Totness to Nieuw Nickerie, and east through Moengo to Albina, with the odd quiet stretch between towns. South of the airport the signal gets less dependable. Brownsberg, the Brokopondo reservoir and the road to Atjoni are patchy at best. Upriver from Atjoni, and anywhere in the rainforest interior, the signal disappears.

Network

Only one network is used here: Digicel Suriname, on 4G. Around Paramaribo the signal is strong enough for video calls with relatives in the Netherlands. Esimy doesn’t throttle; how fast it runs is down to signal, location and your phone. Having one network means there’s no backup when Digicel fades, and it fades as soon as the forest closes in. The borders need a little care. At Albina, your phone may catch a French Guiana network drifting across the Marowijne, and near Nieuw Nickerie a Guyanese one from over the Corentyne. If pages stop loading there, open the network settings for the eSIM line and pick Digicel manually.

Data usage tips

• 1 GB: a week of WhatsApp with family, a few maps and photos, and home Wi-Fi in the evenings
• 3 GB: two or three weeks split between Paramaribo, Commewijne and a weekend at Brownsberg, posting as you go
• 5 GB: a month-long family visit, or a work trip with regular video calls
• River lodges are offline anyway, so don’t size the plan for those days; if you run short, top up the same eSIM

Tourist highlights

Start in Paramaribo’s historic inner city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of white wooden houses with green shutters. The wooden Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is its landmark. Fort Zeelandia and the Waterkant face the Suriname River, and on Keizerstraat a mosque and a synagogue stand side by side. Across the river, Commewijne is best seen by bike, past old plantations such as Frederiksdorp and Peperpot to Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, with boat trips that go looking for river dolphins where the Commewijne meets the Suriname. Brownsberg Nature Park sits on a plateau above the Brokopondo reservoir, with forest trails, waterfalls and howler monkeys. For the deep interior, the road ends at Atjoni and boats carry on up the Suriname River to Maroon villages and lodges. Galibi, in the north-east, is where sea turtles come ashore to nest.

Apps that help

Taxis are usually ordered by phone or through your hotel, and agreeing the fare before you get in is normal. Minibuses leave from the Heiligenweg area near the central market and are the cheap way to Lelydorp or across to Commewijne. Driving is on the left, which surprises a lot of Dutch visitors. Google Maps covers Paramaribo and the main roads; save offline maps before Brownsberg or Atjoni. Guesthouses, river tour operators and your aunt’s neighbour all use WhatsApp. The currency is the Surinamese dollar (SRD). Markets and warung kitchens want cash, and the cambios in the centre change euros and US dollars. Bigger hotels and supermarkets take cards.

eSIM Suriname vs your Dutch phone plan

EU roaming rules stop at the edge of Europe, and Suriname isn’t in the EU, so Dutch and Belgian plans charge it as a rest-of-world destination. Some providers sell a Suriname or worldwide add-on; compare it with ours before you fly. Once you’ve landed, make the Esimy eSIM your mobile-data line (Data Roaming on), and switch roaming off on your Dutch SIM so it’s only receiving texts, such as DigiD or bank codes. The plan stops at the borders. Crossing from Albina to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, switch to our French Guiana eSIM. Taking the Canawaima ferry from South Drain to Guyana? Use our Guyana eSIM.

Why travelers choose Esimy Suriname

  • Digicel Suriname 4G in Paramaribo, Wanica, Commewijne and along the coast road
  • Your Dutch number stays active alongside it for texts and bank codes
  • Working at Zanderij, so you can message family from the arrivals hall
  • Days count from the first connection in Suriname, not from the day you buy

Best time to visit

  • Mid-August to November: the long dry season, the most reliable months for Brownsberg and the river lodges
  • February to April: a shorter dry spell; turtle nesting at Galibi runs roughly from February into the summer
  • 1 July: Keti Koti, the emancipation holiday, with celebrations across Paramaribo
  • 31 December: Owru Yari, when the Waterkant fills with pagara firecrackers and music

eSIM FAQs

Common questions about using eSIM in Suriname

Will my phone support it?

It needs to be eSIM-capable and not locked to one carrier. Recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models usually are; check yours on the list of supported devices.

Can family share my data by hotspot?

They can. Tethering is allowed, so a cousin’s tablet or a travel companion’s phone can use your connection. Keep an eye on the balance, because two devices get through 3 GB quicker than you’d think.

Can I add data while I’m there?

Yes. Log in to your Esimy dashboard or the app and add data to the eSIM that’s already on your phone, with nothing new to install.

What plan size suits a month with family in Suriname? Is there unlimited?

Unlimited isn’t available, and the biggest plan is 5 GB. A week or so of WhatsApp and maps fits in 1 GB. For two to four weeks staying with family on their Wi-Fi, 3 GB is usually plenty; pick 5 GB if you’ll post lots of photos or take video calls while you’re out. If it runs low, top up rather than buying again.

How do I install it and switch it on?

Buy it online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the QR code turns up by email a moment later; no ID is asked for. Scan the code on Wi-Fi before you leave, under Settings and then Mobile Network or Cellular. On arrival, switch on Data Roaming for the new line and make it the mobile-data line. You won’t need to enter an APN, and the plan’s days start counting from there.

Suriname SIM card or eSIM for a family visit?

For two or three weeks, the eSIM spares you a shop visit and showing your passport, and your Dutch number keeps working in the same phone. Staying for months, or want relatives to call a local number? Then a Surinamese SIM card will work out cheaper over time.

Is there eSIM Suriname coverage at Brownsberg and the Suriname River lodges?

Patchy at Brownsberg and on the road south past Brokopondo. Beyond Atjoni, at most lodges and in places like Awarradam and the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, there’s none. Some lodges have Wi-Fi, often slow, so ask before you go and tell family when you’ll be back in range.

Does the eSIM work at Johan Adolf Pengel airport in Zanderij?

Yes, if it’s already installed. The airport lies well south of Paramaribo, close to an hour by road. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM once you land, make it your data line, and you can message whoever is waiting outside arrivals.

What network does the eSIM Suriname plan run on?

Digicel Suriname, on 4G. It doesn’t switch to any other network.

Do I get a Surinamese number with the Suriname eSIM?

You don’t. The plan is data only, so there’s no Surinamese number and no calls or SMS. Family and drivers can reach you on WhatsApp, and your Dutch SIM stays active in dual-SIM for DigiD and bank codes.

Will my Dutch SIM work in Suriname?

It will roam, but not under EU rules. Suriname isn’t part of the EU, so your provider charges its own rate for the rest of the world. Check that rate, or any Suriname add-on, against the eSIM before you fly.

What is the best eSIM for Suriname?

For most visitors, a small plan on the local network. Ours connects to Digicel Suriname over 4G, with a 1 GB plan for 7 days or 3 GB and 5 GB plans for 30 days, with validity counted from your first connection in Suriname. It covers Paramaribo and the coastal districts well. In the interior, don’t expect signal on any plan.
