Before you buy your Montserrat eSIM
Is my phone compatible?
Quick check: dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked.
How much data do I need?
A rough estimate based on typical use. Video and hotspot use the most data.
eSIM Montserrat with FLOW 4G/LTE across the inhabited north
Whichever way you arrive, by ferry at Little Bay or on the short flight into John A. Osborne Airport, an eSIM Montserrat plan from Esimy is on FLOW’s 4G/LTE network the moment you’re on the island.
Few people end up here by accident. The usual route runs through Antigua, then either the ferry to Little Bay or a short hop on a small plane to Gerald’s. Antigua is a separate country, so the plan doesn’t cover that leg.
Brades, Little Bay, Salem, Olveston and the villages around them all have signal, and that’s where nearly everyone on Montserrat lives. The south, including the old capital Plymouth, has been an exclusion zone since the volcano erupted, and you can only go in with permission, normally on a guided tour. Hiking trails in the Centre Hills have gaps, so save an offline map before setting out.
You get data only. There’s no Montserrat number and no SMS, so ring people on WhatsApp or FaceTime instead. This Montserrat eSIM needs no ID, arrives as a QR code by email and can be topped up from the app if a week turns into two.

Montserrat Travel and Connectivity Guide
A small island where the signal follows the people north
Coverage areas
Montserrat is only about 16 km long, and since the Soufrière Hills volcano buried Plymouth in the late 1990s, almost everyone lives in the north. That’s where FLOW’s coverage is: Little Bay, where the ferry docks, then Brades, Salem, Olveston, Woodlands, Look Out and St John’s, out to the airport at Gerald’s. The south of the island is the Exclusion Zone, off limits without permission and usually visited only on a guided tour, so the lack of signal there rarely matters. The Centre Hills, the forested ridge between north and south, have gaps along the hiking trails, and a few coves sit in a signal shadow.
Network
Connects to FLOW (Cable & Wireless Montserrat) on 4G/LTE, the one network this eSIM uses. In the northern villages it’s fine for maps, WhatsApp and a video call home. Down in a ghaut, the local word for a steep ravine, or on the higher trails, it can weaken or drop out. We don’t throttle. Signal and your handset decide the speed.
Data usage tips
• 1–3 GB: a day trip over from Antigua, or a week in a villa with Wi-Fi
• 5–10 GB: two weeks with a hire car, hiking the Centre Hills and sending volcano photos home
• 20 GB: a long stay, or working remotely off your hotspot
Tourist highlights
Begin at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory at Flemmings, where scientists keep watch on the Soufrière Hills and the visitor centre explains the eruptions. Garibaldi Hill gives the clearest view down onto Plymouth, a capital half-swallowed by ash, while Jack Boy Hill looks out over the old W.H. Bramble Airport and the flows that covered the east. Rendezvous Bay is the island’s only white-sand beach, reached by boat or a steep hike from Little Bay; the others, such as Woodlands and Isles Bay, are black volcanic sand. Bird-watchers head for the Oriole Walkway in the Centre Hills, looking for the Montserrat oriole, the national bird. With an authorised guide you may also get into the Exclusion Zone itself.
Apps that help
Ride-hailing apps don’t operate here. Taxis meet the ferry and the flights, and many drivers double as tour guides, so save a good one’s number on WhatsApp. A hire car gives the most freedom; driving is on the left. You’ll also need a temporary Montserrat driving permit, which the rental firm can help you get. Google Maps covers the main roads, but download an offline area before heading into the hills. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory publishes regular activity updates, worth a look before a trip to the viewpoints. Prices are in Eastern Caribbean dollars, though most places take US dollars too. Carry cash, since smaller bars and guesthouses may not take cards.
Roaming, or an eSIM Montserrat plan?
Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory, but UK phone plans don’t treat it as home, and roaming there is usually billed at rest-of-world rates. EU and North American contracts are much the same. With Esimy installed, the eSIM should be your mobile-data line with roaming on, while your home SIM keeps roaming off. Antigua is a separate country and isn’t covered, so use Wi-Fi at V.C. Bird Airport or arrange cover there separately. If your Leeward Islands trip takes in Guadeloupe as well, our Guadeloupe eSIM covers that island.
Why travelers choose Esimy Montserrat
- FLOW 4G/LTE through Little Bay, Brades and the northern villages
- Installed at home, so it works when the ferry pulls into Little Bay
- No passport scan at checkout
- Days start with the first connection on Montserrat
- Hotspot allowed, and extra data tops up the same eSIM
Best time to visit
- December to April: the drier, cooler months and the main visitor season
- Mid-March: the St Patrick’s Festival, a week of events around 17 March, a public holiday here that also marks the attempted slave uprising of 1768
- Mid-December to New Year’s Day: the Montserrat Festival, with calypso, parades and street parties
- June to November: hurricane season, with the wettest weather later in the year

eSIM FAQs
Common questions about using eSIM in Montserrat
Would a Montserrat SIM card from a local shop be better?
Only for a long stay. A local SIM card involves tracking down a phone shop in the north, showing ID and swapping out your own SIM, though it does come with its own number. If you’re moving to the island or staying for months, that trade can be worth it; for a week, the eSIM is less bother.
Which phones work?
Unlocked, eSIM-compatible ones: recent iPhones and a lot of Galaxy and Pixel phones. See the list of supported devices for yours.
Can I tether a laptop or a second phone?
That’s fine. Your hotspot can keep a laptop or a second phone online.
Can I add data to the same eSIM?
Yes. Log in to the app or the Esimy dashboard, choose a plan, and the data is added to the eSIM on your phone.
What size plan suits a Montserrat trip? Is anything unlimited?
A small one, usually. Montserrat is slow-paced and plenty of villas and guesthouses have Wi-Fi. A day trip or a long weekend fits in 1 GB, and a week of driving and photo-sharing is about 3 GB. There’s no unlimited plan, though 20 GB for 30 days covers a long stay.
How do I set up an eSIM Montserrat plan before I travel?
Pay online by card or with Apple Pay or Google Pay; nobody asks for ID. The QR code is emailed right after payment. Scan it on Wi-Fi while you’re still at home or in Antigua. On Montserrat, select the eSIM for mobile data and allow it to roam. The APN sorts itself out, and the 7- or 30-day clock starts with that first connection.
Is there coverage near the volcano and in the south of the island?
Not much, and most of the south is closed anyway. Plymouth and the land around it lie inside the exclusion zone of the Soufrière Hills volcano, and entry needs permission. The Volcano Observatory at Flemmings is in the covered area. Up on the Centre Hills trails, expect gaps.
Does it work at John A. Osborne Airport and at Little Bay?
Both are in the covered north. Turn on roaming for the eSIM as you arrive at Gerald’s or step off the ferry and it’ll connect.
Which network does it connect to?
FLOW (Cable & Wireless), on 4G/LTE. Just the one.
Do I get a Montserrat phone number?
No number comes with it. You get mobile data and nothing else, so calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime. Keep your usual SIM switched on in dual-SIM if you need texts from your bank.
Will the eSIM Montserrat plan also work in Antigua?
No. Antigua and Barbuda is a separate country, and the plan only connects on Montserrat. If you’re spending nights in Antigua either side of your visit, arrange cover for those days separately, or lean on hotel and airport Wi-Fi.
What is the best eSIM for Montserrat?
On an island this size, what counts is good coverage in the north, where you’ll spend your time. Ours connects to FLOW’s 4G/LTE there. It carries data only and is sold without ID, with sizes running from 1 GB for a week up to 20 GB for a month. Data costs more in the Caribbean, so most short visits are well served by one of the smaller plans.
