eSIM Mozambique on Vodacom, for Maputo, the Inhambane coast and Ponta do Ouro

With an eSIM Mozambique plan installed before you leave, you’re on Vodacom Mozambique’s 4G/LTE network as soon as you land at Maputo International or drive over the border from South Africa.

Coverage follows the people. Maputo is well covered, and so are the beach towns most visitors head for: Tofo and Barra near Inhambane, Vilankulo, Xai-Xai and Ponta do Ouro. Between them, the EN1 runs through long rural stretches where the signal disappears for a while, and once the dhow leaves Vilankulo the Bazaruto islands are mostly out of reach.

Data isn’t cheap here. Our eSIM reaches Mozambique through a single network on an expensive roaming deal, so the largest plan is 5 GB. Many lodges and dive centres have Wi-Fi, which is the place for photo backups. Mobile data is better spent on maps and messages.

You won’t get a Mozambican number, because the plan carries data only. Calls go over WhatsApp, which is also how most dive centres take bookings. And a Mozambique SIM card for tourists? It’s cheaper per gigabyte and gives you M-Pesa, but you’ll wait in a shop while it’s registered to your passport. Self-drivers should know the Mozambique eSIM covers this country alone, so add our South Africa eSIM for the drive in.

Mozambique Travel and Connectivity Guide

Easy in the beach towns; harder on the EN1 and out at sea

Coverage areas

Signal is most dependable in Maputo: the Baixa, Polana, Sommerschield, the Marginal out to Costa do Sol, the airport at Mavalane and neighbouring Matola. Cross the Maputo–Katembe bridge and the newer tarred road south to Ponta do Ouro and Ponta Malongane has coverage in the villages and at the beach towns. Up the coast, Xai-Xai, Inhambane, Tofo, Barra and Vilankulo are covered in town and along the main beachfronts, as are Beira, Nampula and Ilha de Moçambique. The gaps sit between towns. Expect them on long stretches of the EN1, on the sand tracks down to remote lodges, in Gorongosa and Limpopo national parks, and around the Bazaruto islands once the mainland is behind you.

eSIM Mozambique network

Connects to Vodacom Mozambique over 4G/LTE, with no fallback to another network. Vodacom is strongest in the cities and coastal towns, which is where most visitors spend their days. Further out, the signal clusters around villages and goes quiet in between. At sea, assume you’re offline once the beach is far behind. That holds on an ocean safari off Tofo and on the dhow crossing to Bazaruto. We don’t throttle anything on our side; speed comes down to signal, location and handset.

Data usage tips

• 1 GB: a long weekend in Ponta do Ouro or a few days in Maputo, enough for maps and messages plus a restaurant booking or two
• 3 GB: one to two weeks down the coast, letting lodge Wi-Fi take the photo backups
• 5 GB: self-driving for a month, or a divemaster course in Tofo, with a bit of hotspot use. Beyond that, add a top-up to the same eSIM

Tourist highlights

Tofo is why many people come. Ocean safaris and dives go out for whale sharks and manta rays, Manta Reef is the best-known site, and humpback whales pass in the winter months. Across the bay, Inhambane is one of the oldest towns on this coast and good for a slow afternoon. Dhows leave Vilankulo for the Bazaruto archipelago (Bazaruto, Benguerra and Magaruque are the main islands) for snorkelling at Two Mile Reef and lunch on a sandbank. Down south, Ponta do Ouro is known for dolphin swims and is a weekend favourite for South Africans driving in; Maputo National Park is next door. Give Maputo itself a couple of days for the Baixa, the old fortress, the railway station, the fish market and the seafront at Costa do Sol. Far to the north, a long single-lane bridge leads to Ilha de Moçambique, a UNESCO World Heritage island of Portuguese-era stone buildings. Pemba and the Quirimbas islands are beach destinations in Cabo Delgado province, which is under travel warnings from several governments. Check your own government’s current advice before planning anything there.

Apps that help

Portuguese is what you’ll hear at border posts, in shops and at police checkpoints. English thins out away from the tourist lodges, so download Portuguese for offline use in Google Translate. Google Maps works in the towns; save offline maps before any day on the EN1. In Maputo, ride-hailing apps and hotel taxis are the easy options. Elsewhere, lodges arrange transfers and chapas (shared minibuses) cover the rest. Dive centres in Tofo and dhow operators in Vilankulo take bookings and change times over WhatsApp. Cards work in Maputo and at larger lodges, but carry meticais for markets and small towns; near the South African border, rand are often taken. M-Pesa won’t work without a registered Mozambican SIM.

Roaming tips

Plenty of visitors arrive by road from South Africa: through Lebombo and Ressano Garcia on the N4 from Kruger and Mbombela, or at Kosi Bay for Ponta do Ouro. This plan covers Mozambique only, so for the South African leg install our South Africa eSIM too. The phone holds both, and once you’re through the border you just change which one carries mobile data. Near the frontier, turn off data roaming on your home SIM, or it may latch onto a network at roaming rates. Police checkpoints are common on the main roads. Keep the car papers and the required safety kit within reach.

eSIM FAQs

Common questions about using eSIM in Mozambique

Can I use this eSIM on the South African side of a self-drive trip?

No, it only works inside Mozambique. For a crossing at Lebombo on the N4, or at Kosi Bay for Ponta do Ouro, add our South Africa eSIM alongside this one and move mobile data over when you cross. Heading on to Lake Malawi or Zambia? Our Malawi eSIM and Zambia eSIM cover those legs.

Which phones are supported?

It needs an eSIM-capable phone that isn’t carrier-locked, which covers most recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models. Our list of supported devices has the full rundown.

Can I use it as a hotspot?

Hotspot and tethering both work. It’s handy for a tablet in the back seat on the drive up from Maputo, but a laptop syncing photos will chew through a small plan.

Which plan suits a two-week beach trip? Is there unlimited data?
  • 1 GB: seven days of mostly messages and maps
  • 3 GB: two weeks on the coast with lodge Wi-Fi at night
  • 5 GB: a month, or two weeks with hotspot use and lots of photo sharing

We don’t sell unlimited data for Mozambique. If 5 GB runs out, top up rather than starting over.

Can I top up the same eSIM?

You can, from your Esimy dashboard or the app, and no new QR code is needed. Do it on Wi-Fi in town before heading up the EN1 or out to an island lodge.

How do I install an eSIM Mozambique plan?

Pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the QR code arrives by email straight away, with no ID check. Scan it on Wi-Fi from your phone’s mobile settings. In Mozambique, set the eSIM as your data line and allow Data Roaming on it. The APN configures itself, and the days start counting when it first connects.

Why are the Mozambique plans so small?

There’s only one network for us to connect to, and its roaming rates are high. We’d rather sell a small plan you can top up than a big one priced out of reach.

Will I have signal on the EN1 and out on the islands?

On the EN1, coverage comes with the towns and fades between them, sometimes for a long stretch. Out at sea it drops once you’re well offshore. The Bazaruto islands are weak or offline away from the mainland, and island lodges rely on their own Wi-Fi. Tell someone your route before a long drive and save offline maps.

Does the eSIM Mozambique plan work at Maputo International Airport?

Vodacom covers the airport, which sits inside the city at Mavalane. If you’ve installed the eSIM on Wi-Fi before the flight, all that’s left after landing is to enable Data Roaming for it.

Which network will I be on?

Vodacom Mozambique, over 4G/LTE. The eSIM doesn’t hop to another network when Vodacom fades, so a gap in Vodacom’s coverage is a gap for you too.

Does the Mozambique eSIM include a phone number?

It doesn’t. You get mobile data and nothing else, so no Mozambican number, calls or SMS. Keep your home SIM switched on in dual-SIM mode for texts, and let WhatsApp handle calls.

What is the best eSIM for Mozambique?

Pick one that’s installed before you fly and runs on a network that’s strong in the coastal towns, since that’s where most Mozambique trips happen. The Esimy eSIM runs on Vodacom Mozambique’s 4G/LTE network, with no ID check at purchase. Plans come as 1 GB lasting 7 days, or 3 GB or 5 GB lasting 30.
